Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumSo is Bloomberg the Biden alternate
I've been wondering if Biden's campaign fails, do the BOG/Obama supporters choose Bloomberg? His policies and approaches seem closer to Obama than anyone else. Yeah, he doesn't have his eloquence, nor Michelle and the kids. But really, other than 64 oz sodas, it would seem that he is the kind of leader that Obama supporters would like.

(2,064 posts)The Biden I see now doesnt seem much more inspiring than the one I saw then (I was a supporter of the Rev. Jesse Jackson). I dont think hes a bad person and hes certainly been a loyal Democrat for his entire political career (now entering its 6th decade). I just dont see the excitement surrounding his campaign that I witnessed around President Clinton or President Obama. Granted, they were amazing stump politicians. And I give Joe Biden credit for getting things done (his forte in the Senate). But is it enough?
I have my doubts.

And yeah, I was a bit disappointed when Obama chose him. Besides all the times he had lost on the national level, he was older than Obama. Quite honestly, a VP choice is about the hope of continuing after ones presidency. I thought that he was a bit "long in the tooth" for that role.
I do wonder if Buttigieg just solidified his qualifications for #2 on the ticket regardless of how things come out going forward.

(2,064 posts)Smart guy. Id like to see more in terms of results as mayor (or any other office). But hes certainly putting in the work to be a VP choice or at least a cabinet appointee.
Who knows, he might even win it...

(38,687 posts)He's been saying that since the '70s when he ran for Senator and Governor and lost 5 times. He's the exciting one who is going to lead the revolution. Biden is sleepy Joe. I would show a pic of the guy who excited people the most in the 20th century, but Godwin's Law is sacrosanct around here.

(16,646 posts)Although Obama famously switched quickly on the health care mandate. He also chose to execute Bush's SOFA in Iraq despite objecting so much to Bush's war. I'm not sure how he would have dealt with stop and frisk if he had been Mayor. Bloomberg didn't invent it.

(67,782 posts)....that Iowa isn't representative of the US. Their largest city has barely 200,000 people - Des Moines is the 101st largest in the country, and the state is 90+ % white. When all is said and done, even if Biden does finish 4th, he'll be no more than about five or six delegates behind the leader.
New Hampshire is even worse - half the population of Iowa, even whiter, and their largest city, Manchester, has only 130,000 people, and is next door to the home state of both Sanders and Warren. Things may change, but Biden is still in second place and Sanders has only one-quarter of the voters in the polls.
No, Biden isn't finished, he's just getting started. By midnight on Super Tuesday he'll have opened a decent lead and will widen it even further a week later.

(16,646 posts)In terms of personality, they aren't even close. God knows he doesn't have Obama's eloquence or presence. But his policies are very close to Bloomberg's, as well as Obama's penchant for "reaching across the aisle". Bloomberg is a bit to the right of Eisenhower, just as Obama claimed to be.

(36,133 posts)To me,
-- he's just another billionaire REBOUND OFFER to those uneasy about "electability" of other candidates. -- his billions don't at all guarantee that he can win a war of words, or debate, against Trump.
-- he is a spoiler who campaigns to suck votes away from other, better qualified Democratic candidates.
-- his ad buys of populist messages are dragged down by his stances on Social Security and opposition to the tax on wealth and promotion of unregulated corporations
-- I don't trust that he'd ever try to scale up any of his NYC accomplishments for the rest of the country -- his uneven approval by New Yorkers points to the same polling he'd get when handling the nation's problems
-- stop and frisk
-- soda pop tax
-- wanting tolls on all NYC bridges
-- bribing the City Council to be allowed a third term
-- he's a corporate animal.
-- Bloomberg is stiff, doesn't speak well in crowds except from script. He doesn't have to be warm and fuzzy, but in front of voters, he fails in the listening department.
-- he's not worth trusting if we've never seen him do rallies or even one town hall.
-- 1990s: Three sexual harassment lawsuits were filed against him
I don't see Bloomberg being any different from 99% of out of touch billionaires who show benign indifference to Americans.
No thanks. Americans need to get control of their country, its money, its governance, and rule of law. What Bloomberg hasn't done is evidence that he won't help them. My opinion.
If he's nominated, I'll vote for him. But until he's the party's choice, mine is elsewhere.

(36,133 posts)Just to reset this government would require thousands returning. There is no one with the body of expertise like Obama's and Biden's.
Bloomberg wouldn't know where to start except with his corporate buddies.
Obama, Carter, et. al., will help ANY new president. As evidenced by his past statements and positions about Democratic governing goals at the national level (no "entitlements," no wealth tax) Bloomberg might not even listen.
That's because not all new presidents could have the judgment about a) working with professional service people AND b) Congress that Joe has. I'll take slips of the tongue any day over slips on morality.
This is primary season, so remember this is just my opinion.
