Numerous caucus goers went home after first allocation

Various reasons (tired, getting late, didn’t like second choices, room too hot, other reasons). Per NYT podcast. This is no way to run a nominating process.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Yeah, caucuses suck, but usually despite the inevitable problems, they still manage to aggregate the totals.

By the rules, If your candidate was viable, you could put your candidate choice on your ballot card and go home. 1 1/2 hours is long enough to detain each voter.

Have a primary with mailed-out ballots and a two plus week voting window, and secure ballot-drop-off boxes. That's the fairest way to do it. And make sure the people who are counting the ballots are objective. My state has this, and I'm quite grateful for that.

If your candidate was viable you could enter your candidate on your paper ballot and go home after the first allocation. If your candidate was not viable, you had to move to a viable candidate and print your candidate choice and sign the back of your ballot and then depart. The ballot count had to total up correctly with the head count. So, the final numbers for each candidate were really obtained from the ballot cards.
