Bloomberg and Biden barrel toward Super Tuesday collision

Mike Bloomberg's presidential campaign is predicated on Joe Biden's collapse.

But Biden has steadied his wobbly bid heading into the Iowa caucuses, sending the two moderates toward a likely Super Tuesday collision.

The emerging battle has those in both camps looking over their shoulders — with Biden seeking to claim the center mantle by gaining unstoppable momentum from the early states and Bloomberg's sprawling operation prepared to pick up the pieces should he falter or seem too weak to win.

Bloomberg’s aides continue to express concerns that Biden and the rest of the Democrats competing in the early states would lose to Trump. They view it as increasingly likely that there will be muddle coming out of South Carolina. And they see Bloomberg’s behemoth organization, growing stable of Super Tuesday endorsements and ability to stretch the map with limitless cash as giving him the edge.

2. Well, that's one way to look at it, i suppose. One writer's opinion.

I've been watching Bloomberg ads, since they're playing frequently in the Twin Cities market. Minnesota is now a Super Tuesday state.

What I find most interesting about his ads is that he very rarely says things like "As President, I will..." Instead, his message is typically, "I'm in this race to defeat Donald Trump."

I don't think Mike Bloomberg is planning to move into the White House at all. I think he's building support that he can transfer to the Democratic nominee. I also think he's hoping that's Joe Biden.

Why is he doing that? I'm not completely sure. He might be gunning for a cabinet post, maybe Secretary of the Treasury, or something like that. Or, maybe, just maybe, he's so pissed off at having Donald J. Trump in the White House that he's willing to spend $1 billion or two on ads to help ensure the Democratic nominee wins.

But, he's not running like someone who wants to be President. He's running against Donald Trump.

3. Bloomberg has a very real chance of winning the nomination

That is if Biden does not appear to be strong heading into Super Tuesday. Bloomberg has limitless money and top talent on his payroll. He produces effective ads and he has a literal track record to run on as a talented public administrator who was wildly successful in the private sector. Bloomberg will reap the benefit of a frantic Stop Bernie movement now building among many established Democratic Party power brokers if Biden is seen as faltering.

We here tend to think that other Democrats think much like we do, which often is not true. We are much involved on a daily basis with politics, our views tend to be deeply rooted in concrete priorities and policies. Not so much with average voters. It makes it hard for many here to understand why Sanders has as much national support as he does, or why any good Democrat would back a recently Republican candidate who financed some Republican candidates in relatively recent time.
