IOWA CITY, Iowa ― Beth Gelding, a retired librarian in this university town, is a committed Joe Biden supporter in next weeks first-in-the-nation caucuses. She thinks hes ready to deal with international leaders and Republicans on day one of his presidency. Shes even hosting a Biden campaign staffer at her house.
Shes also already making plans for his vice president. Were all assuming its going to be a woman, she said after a Biden rally at the University of Iowa on Monday night. Were all thinking that this person can pick up the baton in four years.
Biden, more so than any presidential candidate in recent memory, has faced intense speculation and questioning from his supporters about who he would select as vice president. Participants at events often ask him how he would make his pick ― a question rarely posed to the other candidates in the sprawling field of Democrats seeking the nomination to challenge Republican President Donald Trump in November.
Theres a multitude of reasons for voters to be curious about who Biden, a front-runner for the Democratic nomination, might select as vice president. Biden will be 78 by 2021s Inauguration Day, which would make him the oldest person to assume the presidency, and there have long been rumblings he might serve only a single term at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. It also reflects the rise of pundit voters ― the highly informed primary voters who are trying to craft a dream ticket in order to put the biggest electoral hurt on Republicans.
But many voters, especially women, are also looking for reassurances that Biden will select a woman. They hope that picking the candidate they view as having the best chance of beating Trump doesnt mean giving up on making history.
Its been a long time since Geraldine Ferraro, said Marjorie Tully, another Biden supporter who works at the university hospital here. Ferraro, a New Jersey congresswoman at the time, was Walter Mondales running mate in 1984 when he challenged President Ronald Reagan.
Absolutely. The right woman, said Ellen Nelson, a nonprofit fundraiser who attended a Biden event in the Des Moines suburb of Waukee on Thursday. Its about time.

(5,790 posts)1) Kamala Harris: Pro - fighter, younger, multi-racial, whip-smart, sets her up to run in 2024 or 2028; Con - California = isn't bringing a state Joe isn't already winning to the table
2) Stacey Abrams: Pro - Popular, Southern, might make Georgia really interesting for the GOP, and could raise AA turnout in the South generally; Con - her political experience is limited to the Georgia State House
Then....
3) Elizabeth Warren. Joe makes this pick/has this pick made for him if we have a Bernie/Joe slog along the lines of the Hillary/ Bernie slog in 2016. The pick is made to unite the left and center wings of the party.
4) Amy Klobuchar. Joe makes this pick/has this pick made for him if Trump regains strength in the rust belt, and Joe needs a Midwesterner to go into Iowa, Michigan, and Wisconsin while holding the line in the land of 10000 lakes.

(1,713 posts)and it won't be Harris. It will be a woman, much younger and probably a minority from the south or southwest. It won't be anyone he was on stage with. More likely from Florida than California.

(314 posts)rather I believe she has the qualities that would most help a President Biden have a successful presidency (including shepherding bills through Congress).
And I think it is the ticket that does best in the electoral college and has the best coat-tail effect in swing Senate races and other down-ballot races.
I value the historic importance of the first female VP (as I did when supporting HRC for the presidency in 2016) but they got my backing for being the persons I see/saw as most qualified, not as a gender-based pick.

(123 posts)Amy works on several levels, getting the Midwest votes, woman, would assuage fears that Biden might have healt problems and not finish his term, same philosophy...
Hopefully that news about Minnesota blacks being angry at her isn't too serious.
Keeping the black turnout in mind, I don't have a problem with Kamalah Harris or Cory Booker.
But I think a woman is the way to go.
