I'll bet my guys would love for me to make this...I would have to find a substitute for the canned soups. Quintessential midwest fare - The Hotdish. Gotta love it.

Growing up in southern MN, this hot dish was on regular meal rotation for supper. Filled many hungry bellies. Love it. And still do. It was my girls favorite meal after a cold spring rowing practices. Hot, comforting, and calories, calories, calories.

I moved to California in the early 1970's and was exposed to California food for the first time. Thought I might starve. Lettuce that wasn't iceberg with fake red french dressing? Cioppino? Cheese not wrapped in plastic? Avocado? OMG could not get it past my lips. But amazingly, second time trying all of these new, strange to me foods, I found I liked them. A lot. But Amy's hot dish is still in my winter meal rotation - usually with cream of mushroom soup, though. Try it - you might like it.

"Dishes" like that one will only alienate Californians.

I love Amy. But stay out of the kitchen!

I avoid beef whenever possible. I'd be down to give this a try while the weather's still cold. Not exactly health food but everyone deserves some comfort food once in a while

Straight out of hundreds of church cookbooks. I've made it. Everyone has made it. My mother made it over 50 years ago, long before Tater Tots existed. She made balls of hash-brown potato shreds.

It's not gourmet cooking, but it's tasty and filling, for sure.

Band moms had to bring food to feed the kids and we'd take turns - I was asked to being a 'hotdish' and I had to look it up.

Down here I guess we'd call that a casserole.

19. From "How to Talk Minnesotan, A Visitor's Guide":

"On your visit to Minnesota, you will sooner or later come face to face with Minnesota's most popular native food, hotdish. It can grace any table. A traditional main course, hotdish is cooked and served hot in a single baking dish and commonly appears at family reunions and church suppers. Hotdish is constructed on a base of canned cream of mushroom soup and canned vegetables. The other ingredients are as varied as the Minnesota landscape. If you sit down to something that doesn't look like anything you've seen before, it's probably hotdish. As of the November 1986 state hotdish survey, there were 3,732 different hotdish recipes in Minnesota, up twelve from the previous November. Here are eight hot dishes taken at random from that survey.

Spaghetti-Tuna Hotdish
Garbanzo Bango Hotdish
Velveeta-Hamburger Hotdish
Ketchup Surprise Hotdish
Back of the Refrigerator Hotdish
Doggone Good Hotdish
Turkey Wiener Doodah Hotdish
Organ Meat-Cashew Hotdish"
