Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumPolitico: Biden pulls ahead in new Iowa poll
The Focus on Rural America poll shows the former vice president with 24 percent and the next three top-tier candidates bunched behind him, with Elizabeth Warren at 18 percent, Pete Buttigieg at 16 percent and Bernie Sanders at 14 percent. Amy Klobuchar clocked in at 11 percent.
The survey of 500 likely 2020 caucus goers, conducted January 15-18, and had a margin of error of 4.4 percentage points.
Theres some indication that Warren and Sanders suffered fallout from their recent spat including during and after last week's debate over whether a woman could beat President Donald Trump. Warren contended Sanders told her in a private 2018 conversation that he did not believe a woman could win, which Sanders denied.

(58,785 posts)there weren't enough state delegates left to win (this was months after experts explained it would inevitably come to this), crooked press still pretended Sanders was a contender.
After all, maybe an airplane would fall on Hillary's head.
Or maybe all his fellow superdelegates would agree to Sanders' illicit request to overset the popular vote and give HIM the election. And goodness knows he'd been promising a bunch of times to do just that.
Maybe Repub-FBI-RWMSM-Russia's attempst to take her out afterward, while Sanders waited for a month before finally conceding, would have succeeded.
Wouldn't any one of these justify the press's claim that Sanders could still somehow win?

(10,500 posts)had a win in the electoral college coming, and it would have been by a very comfortable margin.
James Comey turned that entire election upside down. Repeatedly.
His actions were illegitimate. That whole election was illegitimate and it is terrifying that we act like it was perfectly normal.

(146,325 posts)caucus results are in. Then, we'll find out what Iowans think - at least those who make it to the caucuses.
But, Iowa doesn't matter all that much, really. Candidates will divide up the tiny number of delegates that state sends to the Convention. And then, we move on. Iowa will be forgotten three days after its caucuses are held. That's as important as Iowa really is.
New Hampshire, too. Just watch the delegate count on March 4. Then, you'll see how the primary campaign is shaping up. Until then, it doesn't matter, really. Not much, anyhow.

(81,440 posts)would be if one candidate did a grand slam - and took them both.
That candidate would then have momentum and a LOT of press mojo going into South Carolina where it starts to count a lot more because of the size of the voter base.
Im gonna be interested to see how the addition of California to Super Tuesday changes the calculus. California has moved up to much earlier in primary season so its motherload of votes will give its winner a massive leg up. As it should, in my opinion (as someone who is not a Californian anymore). The state with the biggest population and thus the biggest pool of voters should have the most to say about this. It certainly has a pool of voters with the biggest stake in this, and the biggest pool of voters to be affected by whatever happens elsewhere.
Frankly, with apologies to the folks in Iowa and New Hampshire, I still think California should be first. I still think so, even while weve moved to a state thats closer to the end of the line, in size of population, than it is to the front of the line.

(10,839 posts)If these numbers are accurate then it goes a long way in explaining the recent attacks on Biden, the need to turn him into the Grand Plunderer of Social Security. I suspect it's also an attempt to deflect from the ugly spat between Sanders and Warren which has done damage to Sanders specifically.
It's getting ugly!

(10,839 posts)Things are getting very tense as we head for the first contest. I agree, there are probably internal polls that do not look good for Bernie. Consequently, the campaign is throwing everything at the wall hoping something sticks. The most recent attack is claiming that Joe Biden has a big corruption problem, making him unfit for the office of the presidency.
They're getting desperate.
