So, in Bernie's opinion, advanced age is an equivalent "problem" or "negative" to being a woman (which is a lifelong "problem" or "negative." ) Men, at least, have several decades of being a non-problematic age.
ON EDIT: He's just inadvertently confirmed Warren's story.

Question: do you think that gender is still an obstacle for female politicians?
Sanders: Look, I, th- the answer is yes. But I think everybody has their own sets of problems. Im 78 years of age. Thats a problem.
Cont. Im 78 years of age. Thats a problem....If youre looking at Buttigieg, hes a young guy. People will say, Hes too young to be president. You look at this one, Shes a woman. You know, you look at that -- so everybody, you know, brings some negatives, if youd like.

(24,557 posts)I doubt it would be a women or a minority...unless they are a bomb thrower against the Democratic current establishment. He really won't motivate me to vote for him in the primaries, though it is a "no brainer" in the GE.

(10,839 posts)As in, being a woman????
And Joe Biden is the one always accused of . . . gaffes?
Keep digging that hole, Senator Sanders.
Btw, women are the most reliable voters in this country. But please, keep knocking yourself out.

(11,088 posts)He is saying being a woman is an obstacle because people are sexist. And he is saying that his 78 years old is a problem. Clearly he is not saying women are problems.

But if you are a woman, it doesn't matter how old you are -- you're a negative.

(108,990 posts)But being a woman is a problem. Period.
Not just when they're too old. Not just when they're too young.
But when they're a woman, which is (usually) forever.

(11,990 posts)And you're right when you say "Men, at least, have several decades of being a non-problematic age" -- Maybe instead of pointing to his age as an issue (which as you point out, is not a "forever" situation), he should have pointed to his being Jewish.
Yes, there are things that are "problematic" in having the widest possible appeal. Including being black, but that didn't mean it was impossible for Obama to win. Of course people with these "problems" can win, but that doesn't mean you can say that these biases aren't an issue. Yes, people who are black, or Jewish, or female, or old, will have a bit more of an obstacle for them in terms of appealing to the widest possible base, compared to people who are none of these things. That doesn't mean they shouldn't run or that they can't possibly win. But you can't ignore that it's a factor in their chances of success, either.

(4,429 posts)He told the truth about what he said.
He didn't offer spin. He could have. He could have tried to make this all go away - like a more traditional politician. But he didn't.
As a woman - I don't have a problem with him saying that there are many sexist people in this country who might not vote for a woman.
This is truth.
His 'clarification' is devoid of spin --- it's honest and refreshing.

(5,376 posts)If Bernie is being honest now, why did he deny saying the exact thing in private with Sen. Warren? Just days ago his supporters claimed that there was no way Bernie would ever say what was claimed. Stop gaslightling us, you guys sound like Trump supporters. First you deny something that was said, and then when it is repeated, you then proclaim how refreshing and honest he is.

(9,962 posts)... I see age as possibly a "negative" in running for President. If you are 31, it's a negative, for example; you are too young and cannot run! If you are 37, you can run - and I think that's fine. Experience is always a consideration - young people are likely to have less experience, but it's not always true. For example, Pete is much more experienced and capable than The Donald. If you're 81, it can be a negative - if there are health concerns. Health concerns can come at any age, though - health concerns and age increase with age but can't always be associated with age. We have three top tier candidates in their 70s. They appear, to me, in good health. Bernie had a heart attack - but, to me, he seems to be in better health than ever (and he is not at the top of my list). I think it's important to release full, complete, objective health reports. I hope this practice becomes law.
... I don't see being female as a "negative" at all.

There were many comments by Bernie supporters about Hillary that were pretty misogynistic. My concern is that he may be reluctant to make such a statement because he doesnt want to offend his more sexist supporters. That may not be the case, and he could clear it up just by coming right out and saying it shouldnt be an issue.

(2,461 posts)it should be about policy.
Bernie, like all the other candidates, and you and me, have access to polls. And the media has access too. And they make a big deal about it. A really big deal! They are the biggest dividers EVER!
Joe's firewall, Pete's problem with AA older voters, Sanders problem with rich white people.
Funny thing is, his numbers are stronger with women and with Latinos, and certainly stronger with young people than other candidates. Yet his supporters are constantly being bashed for being misogynist and racist. Not this post. Some op-ed today featured on Morning Joe. And they were talking about twitter - holy smokes batman! And they were probably talking about twitters that were criticizing Them! Who represent an elite segment of the party that, yah, the Sanders movement has a problem with. No duh!

Age is a problem. Being female is a problem. Being gay is certainly a problem. Being Jewish is a problem. Being black is a problem. None of those should be a problem but they are in American politics.
