Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and other top Democrats declare open season on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg 😎

Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi used to be Facebook's friends. Not anymore.

A day after Pelosi kicked off a new war of words, calling the social media giant's behavior “shameful” and “irresponsible," Biden ramped up the Democrats' open season on Facebook and its CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, during an interview with the New York Times on Friday.

"I've never been a fan of Facebook," the former vice president said. "I've never been a big Zuckerberg fan. I think he's a real problem."

A federal law that shields Facebook and other internet companies from being held liable for what’s posted on their platforms should be revoked, Biden also told the newspaper.

During her weekly press conference on Capitol Hill, House Speaker Pelosi had sharp words in response to a question about Facebook's power.

“I think what they have said very blatantly, very clearly is that they intend to be accomplices for misleading the American people with money from God knows where,” Pelosi said.

don't even see? But over 50 of which I get my range of info from?

And you think Mashable has the last word on whether Facebook is "sunk in Right Wing Bias"?? Oh NOES! We gots to kill da platform!!

THAT just proves that being right wing is no reason to break up any whole company.

MZ already said to Congress, no reason to break up the whole company. MZ already said to Congress, "Okay, regulate us."

But what Biden and Pelosi and others want to do is eliminate 230, which affects ALL media. They're getting the lying of the right, Putin's and Parscale's bots, and Perception Management drop-ins all mixed up with platform neutrality.

I myself don't see what Mashable maps because I control my threads with a range and depth of organizations that are reputable, snooze those that drift Right, UnLike those that are clearly fascist and corporate leaning, which HAS included the New York Times, among others.

I don't live in a bubble, but don't want Uncle Joe to tell my platform what I can't see, either.

Soft on InfoWars, hard on the PG-13 sites. I hate Infowars. I can see the bias.

And you can see, I'd hope, the value in the difference between my privacy and my security.

This government wants to conflate the two by continuing to use its back doors into Facebook.

Still Facebook and Twitter have helped law enforcement and the FBI immensely.

William Barr's Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen says 70% of 16 million child sexual abuse reports Facebook made last year originated from its Messenger service.

And Barr and his boyz want to stop Zuckerberg's implementing end-to-end encryption which, when applied, WON'T keep us and the children safe. After they were saying for years that it would from the RUSSIANS.

So after that, all these messages will no longer be visible to Facebook, and also less accessible to law enforcement. Rosen compares the millions of Facebook reports to the very limited number produced by Apple, which has provided end-to-end encryption for a few years now. Apple has forwarded a little over 200 tips over the last three years. As Rosen supposes, it can't simply be because no child abusers use iPhones.

NOW, William Barr's Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen wants, lately, to eavesdrop on millions of encrypted accounts. Everywhere. He doesn't care if encryption will result in far fewer FB reports, or if Facebook can't scan messages for child porn. He'll have his warrantless eavesdropping. And so will every foreign hacker.

Anyway, this good vs bad stuff can get lined up as a huge thread of its own.

But my main point is that maybe, just maybe, Biden and Pelosi are going for the wrong media "bad guys."

When the only people Pelosi and Biden ask for opinions are those who think undermining encryption is a necessity, they're going to come to the same conclusion.

Then here comes everybody -- the Russians, Chinese and my kids -- but hey, nail those lying ad agencies, save the children, and don't worry about all that foreign eavesdropping, folks, you're safe with us!

Trust me, the FBI has ALWAYS done okay without digital eavesdropping, or the likes of Barr and Trump around. Wonder who benefits when Zuckerberg and Twitter go down? You'll see.

Oh wait. You won't.

I might not keep up that much with tech, but I keep up better than most people, having two sons in IT, one here and one in Australia; having read books on this stuff; keeping up with tech news and issues.

But more than that, I keep up with WHO in this government even knows enough to have our best tech interests at heart.

It's not very respectful to his supporters to not even come out clearly and cleanly with what he's talking about.

First of all, Biden admits upfront that the reason he thinks CDA 230 should be repealed is because of his personal dislike of Facebook's founder and CEO.

It's one thing to argue that the platform creates harms and therefore we need a different regulatory approach, but to start out by saying you just don't like the guy, and use that as the basis for punishing the entire internet is... wow ... something.

He wants to hurt a company whose worth he's not even familiar with. That's not fair to the rest of us who know how a company like Facebook grows and changes at massive scale. The stupid with the good. Cuz Silicon Valley's full of younguns.

Picking a political target that is important to a whole voting demographic isn't wise.

And why doesn't he just bring it up in the context of hybrid warfare, at least? If he wants votes, he can attract a lot by addressing Americans about the uses and abuses in the digital world, and about how the digital world's owners and managers can be profitable and still helpful to this country.

Sun Jan 19, 2020, 09:07 PM

In order to make a buck and get his new idea off the ground, he made the platform open to anyone and anything.

In other words, he wound his moral compass and social responsibility dials back to zero. Success and dollars ruled his every thought.
(I see no evidence he actually possesses those characteristics, but I will give him the benefit of the doubt.)

Freedom of speech is all very nice, but it's got to be used in a positive manner. Fake news, social engineering, negativity aren't anything positive or to be encouraged.

Time for those Mark needs to listen to, to remind him he has succeeded, his platform is a success, and he is rich. Now it's time to get those dials back into registering what is going on in the Facebook space.

Of course, Mark could just be a Trump personality clone with no redeeming personal characteristics at all.
