PORTSMOUTH, N.H. When the head of New Hampshires leading foundation for women arrived at a local Womens March to find she would be sharing the stage with Sen. Bernie Sanders, she backed out.
At the same event, a prominent former state senator turned her back when he spoke.
After a week-long flare-up with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Sanders sought to bolster his support among women on Saturday. But for a number of New Hampshire activists, he only made it worse.
In the context of the last week's events, it was especially ironic it was Sen. Sanders speaking, said former state Sen. Iris Estabrook, who has endorsed Sen. Amy Klobuchar.
She was at the event with a sign reading, When women vote, women win.
That was the spirit of this thing, and it was unfortunate that the senator and whoever gave him the platform didn't respect the original purpose of the gathering, she said. I was disturbed enough that when the senator spoke I took a break from the rally and went elsewhere.
Tanna Clews, CEO of the NH Foundation for Women, was slated to be the first speaker at Seacoast March for Women, held on the steps of the citys North Church.
But when she arrived to see Sanders team setting up a sound system, it suddenly felt too much like a political rally instead of a march for women, she said in a social media posting.

(7,143 posts)Leaders of the Womens March apologized Saturday for the hurt and confusion among women who disagreed with the decision to have Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders (I) speak on the opening night of its first national convention.
Critics had protested on social media that Sanders not only had run a negative campaign against Hillary Clinton in last years Democratic presidential primary, but also that he and his supporters continue to push the Democratic Party away from its base of women and people of color toward the concerns of the white, working class. Many women were simply disappointed that a man was tapped to kickoff a womens convention, scheduled for Oct. 27-29 in Detroit.
<snip>
The groups initial announcement on Thursday brought brought swift and stinging criticism. Feminist activist and author Roxane Gay posted a tweet calling it absolutely a disgrace.
<snip>
Stephanie Schriock, president of Emilys List, which works to elect Democratic women who support abortion rights, said choosing Sanders to open the convention sends the wrong message. She said in a statement that Emilys List had reached out to the organizers of the Womens Convention to offer our help to strengthen the program.

(154 posts)What does it say about a man that does not care what women are saying enough to continue to ignore women when they make the statement they do not want Sanders to be the focus in our women marches? To totally ignore what women are saying for his ego to be center stage.

(14,586 posts)that would arguably improves the lives of most Americans is being rejected. Because if the candidate is rejected, the media will pounce on it and say his platform is ALSO being rejected.
On the other hand, if Bernie actually said this to Warren, it was, well...foolish. To say the least.
For the record, I do not think Bernie is a misogynist or a racist, and I DO remember Clinton in 2008 saying Obama couldn't win, "He CAN'T win!" So, yeah, we have a ways to go with racism and with misogyny. We do.

(154 posts)all three of those times women reacted strongly and he was blocked from owning the women marches and conventions. This is not the first time it has been made clear the insensitivity of the man to insist on front stage for women events. He has well been taught this is offensive and does it anyway. Again.
What does that say about Sanders?

(154 posts)How about. If a white person stood in front of an NCAAP rally and as the first speaker told them what the issues are for black people, do you think there would be resentment? If that white person had campaigned a couple years ago that black people were voting for Obama only because of the color of skin, then to cry that is not fair, do you think there would be a reaction?
Further. If a white person did this, and black people got angry, would that white person then tell them to settle down, be quiet, they do not have any reason to be voicing their thoughts, opinion, anger? You know, lower those eyes, hands in lap, sit quietly because that white person is par with MLK.

We're arguing about two different things here I believe.

(154 posts)has been taught many times not to step in front to speak for black people at a POC rally. I would certainly question why that white person continues to do it with black people refusing to participate at their own rally.

(33,643 posts)I find that when you don't like someone to start with, it's really easy to perceive REALLY bad things about them, when objectively the evidence doesn't truly back up the more serious 'charge'.
I'll leave it at that.

(14,586 posts)this time around, I have seen a certain tone deafness.
The guy is probably really left brained. He is so focused on his issue, and so convinced that ending the wealth inequality, providing health care, his Wall Street transaction tax, and so on, that he really has no room for much else - such as those racism and sexism issues that are coming back to bite him.
See, I think this might be an aspect of white male privilege. He so firmly believes that his economic justice will make everyone's lives better, that he doesn't acknowledge the social justice pieces until he is forced, and then he does it poorly.
But, again, I firmly believe that he is neither racist nor sexist, and would probably address the social justice issues also. Probably. But he has no specific plan for it.
Problem is, I'm not particularly sure Biden has, either. And Buttigieg still has problems with credibility in the AA community.
Bottom line - whoever wins the nomination will be human, and by definition have some flaws. But when you consider who they will be facing up against, there is no question we'll have to go all out supporting whomever the Democratic nominee is.

(68,632 posts)Heath Mello and Tom Perriello. Perriello in particular was disturbing because we all knew that the governor of Virginia was going to be called upon to veto the 20 Week abortion restriction bill ...he vote for the Stupak amendment in the House...so I have serious reservations about Sen. Sanders and issues that are important to me.

(6,231 posts)My problem with Bernie is that he has way too much baggage which will hurt him if he gets the nomination. The repubs are just waiting to unload if needed. Biden can win enough states to beat trump. Biden running with a strong progressive Democratic woman would be a winning ticket. For many of us that's all that matters. We can't blow this.

(10,836 posts)Nothing to see here move along,, yada, yada.
Not really.
We're living in a different era now, one in which women react strongly when they see another woman disparaged and/or told that their specific concerns are a mere misunderstanding. That dance move doesn't work anymore. Elizabeth Warren has called for a detente on this issue but the reaction at this New Hampshire women's meeting is indicative of one important fact: women do not forget or minimize slights. They don't sit down and shut up. And they don't take kindly at the polling booth or elsewhere to men who feel justified to walk in with their own message, rather than aligning with the group's original intent. Because what does that say?
My message is more important than yours.
If Bernie Sanders and his campaign don't know that, they don't know anything at all. Btw, the twitter barrage from Bernie supporters calling Elizabeth Warren a backstabbing snake has only made things worse.
Nor smart, Senator Sanders.
