Democratic Primaries

Its known as the neighborhood barbershop to many in the Edgefield and North Augusta community, but Big Barbershop was more than that Friday as Democrat Joe Bidens presidential campaign made it part of its latest South Carolina push.
The statewide tour was billed as Bidens South Carolina Soul of the Nation Surrogate Bus Tour. The stop in North Augusta featured the former vice presidents sister, Valerie Biden Owens; Birmingham, Ala., Mayor Randall Woodfin; actor Sean Patrick Thomas and state Rep. Bill Clyburn.
Owner Rodney Tillman was approached by a former county councilman and Democratic Party supporter who asked whether he would be interested in hosting the event.
I thought it would be a good way to shine a light on the community, he said. We just want to know what (Biden) can do as far as jobs, single parent households. We just want to know what he can do for us.
About 60 people came out to show their support for the presidential hopeful as they were encouraged by the surrogates and guest host Antjuan Seawright to vote on Feb. 29 in the South Carolina Democratic primary.
In six weeks, you will make a very important decision, Woodfin said. One that can change the trajectory not just in this county but the United States of America and making sure we push Vice President Joe Biden not only to the top of this ticket but the rest of the candidates down this ticket as well.
Thomas is a native of Delaware, where Biden served as senator, and says Biden is the perfect candidate for president.
The No. 1 reason (I support Joe Biden) is because he is the only candidate running that has a laser focus on the most important thing, and thats beating Donald Trump, he said. We need change and we need new leadership in the White House. Hes on top of that.
Members of the crowd voiced their displeasure with the Trump administration and hoped that South Carolina Democrats turn out in November to help turn the predominantly Republican state blue.
A lot of times we get pessimistic because of the history of South Carolina and goes Republican every time regardless of who it is, and last time it was really bad, Julius Stephens said.
Some attendees said they are still mulling over their options for the primary. George Brightharp said the presentation was moving and motivating but he is still shopping.
Im not 100 percent convinced one way or another, he said. Im taking it all in and praying about it.
This was Biden Owens second trip to the area, having made a campaign stop in October at the Aiken County Democratic Party headquarters in downtown Aiken. At Fridays event, she spoke to her brothers character and how the family was raised.
We realized that progress wasnt equal, growth wasnt equal, opportunity wasnt equal and my parents told us to do something about it, Biden Owens said. To engage, and thats what my brother has done his entire life
