Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumJust curious: What were the 10 losses of the men on the stage?
I suppose Sanders lost the 2016 nomination and Biden the 2008? And Butigieg the Indiana State treasurer but what else?

(58,911 posts)1. Bernie lost his first race for Congress in 1988 (1) and the 2016 race for POTUS (2).
2. Joe lost two races for president (4).
3. Pete lost a race for statewide office in Indiana (5).
That's all I remember.

(32,025 posts)Which is what Warren was trying to imply. Are you going to include his loss for 7th grade student body president? I expect that is next....

I remember reading somewhere, maybe it was his biography (BTW, that's a great book!) that dropping out was a God-send.

(67,782 posts)....both times before the election took place. The first time he dropped out in 1987 months before the first contest, and in 2008 he did "lose" the Iowa Caucus, which technically isn't an election, then he dropped out.
But, if we're including primaries and caucuses, though, Sanders lost about 35.

I don't think primaries really count as "elections", they determine if a candidate can qualify for an election. If a primary counts, then Warren way underestimated the number of elections everyone lost (Sanders alone lost about 35 in 2016)

(45,457 posts)There was some stuff where Sanders had defeated a Republican but it didn't count because it was 30 years ago.

So Sanders was right and Warren was wrong there.

And none of this nonsense helps either candidate. It's good that the primaries are starting now since these debates are less useful.

(67,782 posts)...so even if 2 of them never lost an election, if the other two lost say 6 and 4, that's "10" for all four.
It was a sneaky shot at a couple of them. Steyer has never been in an election and Biden never lost an election. In fact, Biden has won nine elections - one for New Castle County Council, six for Senator and two for Vice President.
I don't think entering and then dropping out of two primary campaigns would be included. Even so, he never really lost a primary either - he dropped out in 1987 from the 1988 primary campaign and then dropped out in 2008 after the Iowa caucus and before the first primary in New Hampshire.

(49,004 posts)clever when you first hear it (and I first ran across this argument months ago, and laughed the first time), but as soon as you start thinking about how many more elections the men on the stage had been in, and how many they'd won -- not to mention the time frame Warren added to shut out Sanders' 1990 win (though she was off by ten months there, given the Nov. 1990 election date) -- it starts to look silly.
She has a real record to run on. Trying to belittle her male rivals this way doesn't help her. Possibly hurts her with male voters.
