Biden's remarks in Texas tonight (Bloomberg reporter's thread - UPDATED)

Last edited Wed Jan 15, 2020, 10:59 PM - Edit history (1)

These tweets were posted minutes ago by Jennifer Epstein before a speech Biden's giving tonight. She's quoting the speech text given out by the campaign in advance.

Thread starts here, full text of her tweets below:

Biden to say tonight in Texas: “The Bull Connors of today don’t always stand in the street with firehoses and dogs—they wear nice suits and wield their power to pass policies that roll back rights, roll back protections, cut funding for the programs that benefit the poorest ...

... and most vulnerable, seek to deny access to health care and quality education, turn away refugees and asylum-seekers.”

Biden on restoring the soul of nation: “People misunderstand me. I’m not being nostalgic. I’m not trying to take America back to some period that never existed.” But “all men and women are created equal” remains “the North Star for this nation–always pulling us towards justice.”

“Today, it’s not firehoses and snarling dogs that have brought America to an inflection point,” Biden will tell a black church gathering tonight. “It’s Donald Trump’s poisonous divisive politics. And now we have a tremendous opportunity to take the next great step forward“ in ‘20

Biden is speaking shortly at the National Baptist Convention Mid-Winter Board Meeting in Arlington, Texas

Editing to add that she's posted a couple more tweets during and just after the speech. The second one was added to the thread starting with the link above

"Everything that's made America America is, in my humble opinion, at risk," Biden says.

but this tweet was posted just before it, and not linked to the thread:

Biden recalls civil rights leaders, says there are still "giants walking among us" and there is "no man with more courage than my friend @repjohnlewis." When Biden sees Lewis, he regrets not doing more.

Editing again to add Epstein's final tweets about the speech as BIden delivered it, which followed the tweet about what's at risk. Four tweets starting with this one, full text of all four below:

"Now so much of what we've gained is under attack but I haven't given up hope. Hope springs eternal," Biden says.

"I didn't anticipate that we'd ever go back" from the progress of seeing a black man become president, Biden says, "I didn't anticipate 2017."

"Please continue to give hope, hope, hope," Biden says in closing to the National Baptist Convention Mid-Winter Board Meeting.

To cheers, Biden quoted James Cleveland:
"I don't feel no ways tired
I've come too far from where I started from
Nobody told me that the road would be easy
I don't believe He brought [us] this far to leave me"
Then he added:
"& He will not leave me bc of you so thank you all..."
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
