Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders continues to hold a commanding 15 percentage point lead over the rest of the Democratic presidential candidates among college students.
The latest weekly Chegg election tracker survey of Democrat or Democratic Party-leaning undergraduates across the U.S. saw Sanders close out of the year with 38 percent support - which ties his top approval rating for the year. Sanders has dominated polling at the college level through much of the 2020 campaign, although former Vice President Joe Biden has seen the most significant decline in support since the survey started last March.
According to the Chegg poll which ended December 31, Sanders is 15 points head of his next closest rival, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, who has 23 percent approval.
Sanders has overwhelmingly remained at the top of the weekly poll of 1,500 U.S. college students since March. Warren briefly overtook Sanders in mid-October before the Vermont Democratic senator saw his biggest jump in support through the remaining weeks of 2019.

(115,847 posts)Since he and his ex-Stein-supporter surrogates seem to spend as much time bashing the so-called "establishment" Democrats as they do going after Trump, I doubt that he would be able to "bend them to his will" very easily. He seems to have forgotten that he will need the backing of a substantial majority of the Democrats in Congress if he wants to accomplish his more controversial goals.

(10,500 posts)I said that it wasn't easy for Democratic presidents to get the votes of Democratic members of congress.
I said this in response to your statement that: "A Democratic president can easily bend a Democratic Congress to do his will. If he wants to."
The 1993 Clinton/Gore budget and the ACA both just barely passed. But pushing for them was the right thing to do.

(45,120 posts)get those programs through Congress. There are always concessions, that's a given. It all depends on what the president is willing to give up to get what he wants and where he is willing to start the negotiations with the other side at.

(3,855 posts)A hostile Congress is no more likely to agree to a small change than a big one. We can look at Obama's tenure, where opposing him become an end in and of itself.
But if history is any indication, a Democratic President will also draw in Democrats to Congress. It would be weird for people to vote in the President and not vote down-ticket. And that means Sanders would have a Congress that he can bend to his will.
Also to paraphrase Warren, why should we elect a President based on what they won't do and will never fight for?

(11,330 posts)so it is not a matter of what the president is willing to do.
It is a matter of what Congress is able to do.
And based on Sanders experience in Congress, he hasn't been able to do much.

(11,330 posts)the problem is that Sanders doesn't caucus when its in the democrats interest instead of in Sanders interest.
And that is why Sanders winning the presidency would be a disaster for the US and the democratic party. it would literally be a waste of 4 years when we can little afford to waste more time

(10,156 posts)since he's so persuasive and right about everything, maybe he should stop wasting his time with the Dems and switch to caucusing with the other side. Maybe the force of his personality can tip those 4 reluctant GOP senators to finally rebel against Moscow Mitch's dictates and actually get something done.
Now that would be a boon for the country. But I'm not going to hold my breath: I'll settle for Bernie using his current bully pulpit to make more people know how important it is to take back the Senate and to support Democratic candidates, no matter who.
