Two Pa. reps in battleground districts - Chrissy Houlahan and Conor Lamb - endorse Joe Biden

Joe Biden, who uses his middle class Scranton roots to cast himself as the Democratic candidate who can beat President Donald Trump by winning over voters in purple districts and states, now has the backing of two Pennsylvania members of Congress from battleground districts the party hopes to win in the fall.
U.S. Reps. Chrissy Houlahan, of Chester County, and Conor Lamb, of Pittsburgh’s suburbs, plan to endorse Biden Monday along with Rep. Elaine Luria, from Virginia Beach, Va. All three represent districts traditionally held by Republicans in key swing 2020 states, feeding Biden’s narrative that he is a consensus candidate in the critical month leading to the primaries.

“Our country needs a steady hand, someone who can help heal the country, an experienced and proven leader who can build teams with deep expertise and work across the aisle," Houlahan said of Biden in a statement released Sunday. "Like me, he believes that in this polarized environment, real change will come from pragmatic solutions that help working families. Pennsylvania is not red or blue but a purple place which our next President needs to carry to win. .”

The announcement comes as Biden, whose campaign is headquartered in Philadelphia, aims to build momentum heading into the Feb. 3 Iowa caucuses, the first votes in the nominating contest. Biden polls around third place in Iowa and New Hampshire, the second-voting state, but remains atop the polls in South Carolina and Nevada. He’s also coming off a strong fundraising quarter in which his team brought in $22 million, a 50 percent increase over the last quarter, trailing South Bend Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s $24.7 million and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ $34.5 million.

These are real Democrats is swing districts who need a strong candidate at the top of the ticket

Joe Biden has landed endorsements from several House Democrats representing some of the toughest battleground districts in the country as he works to prove his electability in swing states.

Biden’s presidential campaign announced on Sunday that it had won the backing from Reps. Conor Lamb and Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania and Elaine Luria of Virginia — three centrists with military backgrounds — as he seeks a breakout moment in the purple state of Iowa next month.

All three of the House Democrats referred to Biden’s foreign policy experience, which the former vice president himself has repeatedly touted in the wake of the Trump administration’s killing of Iran’s top military commander last week.

“Our country needs a steady hand, someone who can help heal the country, an experienced and proven leader who can build teams with deep expertise and work across the aisle,” Houlahan, who served in the Air Force, said in a statement released on Sunday.

“Pennsylvania is not red or blue but a purple place which our next President needs to carry to win,” she said.

2. Three Democrats who flipped House districts endorse Joe Biden

Three House Democrats who flipped Republican-held districts in 2018 announced Sunday that they are endorsing former Vice President Joe Biden in the crowded presidential primary. All three served in the military.

Pennsylvania’s Conor Lamb, a Marine veteran, and Chrissy Houlahan, an Air Force veteran, along with Elaine Luria of Virginia who is a retired Navy commander, all said Biden is the right candidate to unify the country. Last week, first-term Iowa Democratic Rep. Abby Finkenauer also announced that she was backing Biden.

Their endorsements come as Biden has argued his candidacy would boost Democrats in competitive House and Senate races in 2020. Biden, who served in the Senate for 36 years, has led the primary field in congressional endorsements so far.
