Amy Klobuchar accepts campaign donation from Central Park 5 prosecutor Linda Fairstein

New York Daily News

Sen. Amy Klobuchar has reportedly accepted a presidential campaign donation from Linda Fairstein, the controversial prosecutor who led the botched and racially charged Central Park 5 case.

The Democratic candidate for the White House, who has been rising in recent polls on the back of strong debate performances, took $1,000 from Fairstein, according to a report in The Guardian.

Klobuchar, a former prosecutor herself who trumpeted her “tough on crime” policies, did not immediately comment on the report.

Fairstein has long been a lightning rod for criticism over her handling of the controversial case that put five young black men behind bars for the 1989 rape of a jogger in Central Park.

just as it was back for mobsters back then.

The very long and admirable other history of this 72-year-old doesn't matter squat against portrayal in a movie. Certainly not worth withholding the rope while waiting to examine the facts.

I don't know what those are, but I do know I never join social media mobs. Huge flaming red flags. And if Sen. Klobuchar, who is probably acquainted with this distinguished activist, chooses to accept her donation, I'm fine with it until further notice. What'd Trump do in the last half hour?

But Ms. Fairstein, 72, called it “grossly and maliciously inaccurate,” as she put it in her resignation letters to several boards.

“The truth about my participation can be proved in the pages of public records and case documents,” she said in her letter to the chairman of Vassar’s board. “But that has not been apparent to those embracing the mob mentality that now dominates social media, any more than it was considered by the rashly irresponsible filmmaker.”

Hard on her, but not as hard was what those boys went through. She'll just have to tough this turn in her own life out and take up growing roses or something.

successfully in a cutthroat world. There were plenty of people who wanted to take her down, especially after she began writing her books. Too many of them saw, or thought they saw themselves in the pages of her novels.

Of course those boys went through hell. But there are still people out there who think they had some knowledge about the crimes that they did not divulge.

I am sure that people here all jump all over me for trying to see an inkling of of unfairness in the way Fairstein was treated. Women in positions of power are always scrutinized more than men. If they make mistakes, it is over for them. I see it all the time with women in politics, even at the lower levels where I am an activist.

of them many times over the years. Slander and character assassination campaigns, active sabotage of work, and extensive use of legal attacks, including formal claims of violations of workplace protections (like sexual harassment of male coworkers) are standard.

As for different standards for women, how about Hillary's? Over 7 billion people, and she was required to live up to a standard designed just for her, one she had to fail by existing.

So I don't doubt it for a moment. If only all the people who imagine themselves as enlightened culture warriors actually were.

As this one and it's headline did.

I noticed a distinct lack of facts explaining exactly what the prosecutor supposedly is guilty of, that's typical of tabloid coverage.

Perhaps you could tell me exactly what the prosecutor in question did wrong in this case?

Thank you.

can read (and many who can't) know about the Central Park Five. She was notorious for a few other questionable cases, too. It didn't help when Private Citizen Trump bought a full page ad in the Times urging the execution of the Five-- before they were convicted. Kinda lights a fire under prosecutors when that happens.

Fairstein actually was lauded for some time for the job she did prosecuting crimes against women, but all NYC prosecutors get caught up in politics and the outcomes are rarely good.

is relevant to her making a relatively small donation to any candidate now. Fairstein's actions as a prosecutor in that case deserve the harshest criticism; however, since leaving the Manhattan DA's office in 2002 she has been active in initiatives related to domestic violence and other women's issues, and founded the Domestic Violence Committee of the New York Women's Agenda. This might explain why she has donated to both Klobuchar and Warren.

Amy Klobuchar returns $1K donation from Central Park prosecutor Linda Fairstein

https://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/ny-amy-klobuchar-central-park-5-prosecutor-linda-fairstein-20200103-fybmztonlnf63fynx52bemniw4-story.html?fbclid=IwAR35AQP9E1k9rK_5ftbw8tdKDh_ONoknEcu1RNt7gN6fPfSG6Ts_Om5kEdQ

Sen. Amy Klobuchar is returning a presidential campaign donation from Linda Fairstein, the controversial former Manhattan sex crimes prosecutor who led the botched and racially charged Central Park 5 case.

The Democratic candidate for the White House, rising in recent polls thanks to strong debate performances, says she is returning Fairstein’s $1,000 donation.

SNIP

The ex-prosecutor also donated to Elizabeth Warren in 2012 — and Warren also disavowed her support.

The Central Park 5 case may play a role in the 2020 presidential election. President Trump infamously called for the young suspects to be executed in a full-page ad at the time, when he was a prominent real estate developer in the city.
