This is what David Sirota is spreading on twitter:

He's repeating misleading truncated quotes of Joe Biden AND circulating a graphic calling Biden "blue trump".

"Sirota campaigns like a damn republican."

Yup. Sanders does. Those tactics work for those he's drawn so far and, because he can't get enough Democrats, for those he still needs to: Trump's populist fallaways. Studies show Republican leaders long ago degraded their main ideology to essentially "stop liberalism" and "stop the Democrats," and the teapartier/trumpsters themselves rebelled by adding "and keep your hands off my Social Security." Populism.

This is the second election in which Sanders is marketing himself to populists on both sides: to resentful LW populists and aspiring socialists as an alternative to the mainstream Democratic Party and to RW populists as an alternative to Trump and the Democratic Party.

There was a time when such tactics would have been below Bernie, but his presidential run in 2016 changed him dramatically and I barely recognize the man anymore. If Bernie is not giving the orders, which is possible, he is allowing his surrogates to do or say whatever they want. If he is not in control of his campaign, how will he be in control of his administration. It conjures up an image of a chaotic, rudderless White House with no real direction.

I am afraid that a lofty goal of making the world a better place may have been replaced with a goal of winning at any cost. Running for president can be a real test of one's character and resilience.

Sun Jan 5, 2020, 10:56 AM
Jan 2020

did he just not need to run such ruthless, dishonest campaigns in Vermont to get reelected to congress for nearly 30 years? Did the person or the situation change?

I believe his history actually revealed the answer long ago that many just didn't suspect of the very undistinguished I-Sanders face in group photos or the newly interesting one many first noticed in the first debate. He's always believed in the righteousness of and critical need for his lofty goals.

With the WH unexpectedly seeming attainable, my notion is that in 2015-2016 he added the belief in a critical need to place himself there, and with that a conviction that winning at all costs is justified. His history and writings reveal that his belief in himself has always been as strong as his contempt for those who don't share it.

As you say, running's a test of one's character, and so would be winning great power. I believe that any candidate who relies so extremely heavily on deceiving voters about what socialism and Democrats are and also on avoiding press scrutiny -- most seek as much as possible -- could have more previously unsuspected reveals with that power.

In 2000, we heard a lot about how the two parties were exactly the same and the only moral vote was a vote for Nader. That got us W, the attacks on 9/11, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. And Supreme Court decisions like Citizens United.

Of course we heard the same nonsense in 2016. From David Sirota. So this is not new or unexpected.

Thu Jan 2, 2020, 01:37 PM
Jan 2020

We are watching in real time a repeat of the types of divisive nonsense that blew up 2016.

The only individual this election should be about is the narcissistic asshole currently sitting in the Oval Office. When bullshit like the above is spread far and wide, make no mistake, it does have an influence on those who are less well informed. Equating Biden to Trump is simply nonsense.

While I may agree with Sanders on many issues, I'm not naive enough to think that his way is the only way or that those who don't share his EXACT beliefs are somehow enemies. If Bernie disagrees with the posts his subordinates are posting on Twitter, then he needs to come out and make a strong statement and put an end to this now. As an observer, it would be easy for me to say that he has brought into his campaign leadership a group of individuals who care more about electing Bernie than they do about actually getting democrats elected. At the end of this primary, that has the be our primary goal, no matter who ultimately prevails in the nomination. I hope Bernie addresses this and puts a stop to it immediately, but I'm not convinced that will happen.

86. Who hires people like this?
Thu Jan 2, 2020, 02:52 PM
Jan 2020
When a candidate keeps trying to tell us exactly who he is...we should indeed listen.

Journalist David Sirota has spent the past few months trashing Democratic candidates not named Bernie Sanders, as well as those who support anyone other than Sanders. “Positively unhinged,” he tweeted in response to those who disagreed with one of his takes. His critics, he said at another point, are “mentally incapacitated.”

snip===================================================================

But what Sirota, who wrote for a variety of publications, didn’t reveal was where he was coming from: essentially, from inside Sanders’s campaign.

Unmentioned to his 125,000 Twitter followers and readers of his articles, Sirota has been advising Sanders while publicly attacking the candidate’s critics and rivals. On Tuesday, the relationship became official — Sirota was hired as a speechwriter and senior adviser to Sanders — just as the Atlantic magazine called out what could be the journalist’s conflict of interest

snip==================================================================

Sirota, 43, not only didn’t mention his relationship with Sanders’s campaign but apparently sought to erase his long history of attacks against Sanders’s opponents, according to the Atlantic. Just hours before his hiring by Sanders was announced, Sirota deleted about 20,000 or so of his tweets. He suggested that the timing of the mass deletion was coincidental, telling the Atlantic that his account was scrubbed by an “autodeleter” that periodically and automatically removes his posts.

It remains unclear how long Sirota advised the Sanders camp before his hiring. Neither Sirota nor Sanders’s representatives responded to multiple requests for comment on Wednesday.

In what Bernie is doing and what Trump does? They both take things out of context and twist them into some bastardized version....or just make things up. I'm not fooled that Sirota does this one his own. Sanders has him on staff for a reason.

This has gone on long enough. It happened in 2016 and is happening now.

95. A deceptively edited video of Joe Biden signals what's coming
Thu Jan 2, 2020, 03:18 PM
Jan 2020

A video that was edited in a monumentally dishonest fashion to make Joe Biden sound racist just circulated all over Twitter. Distressingly, some reporters and people with large Twitter followings tweeted out the video, before others drew their attention to the full context, causing them to backtrack
.
It is simply incredible that anyone in the business of informing people would circulate a video like this before verifying the full context. Have we really learned nothing in the past few years? One hopes this episode will be taken as a cautionary tale of what’s coming.

The video in question, which your humble blogger will not link to, shows only 19 seconds of a 13-minute monologue that Biden delivered in New Hampshire. Biden had been asked by an audience member to speak about his work and his agenda on sexual assault and domestic violence....

One of the original purveyors of this disinformation (again, we won’t link) is still pretending this was an honest depiction, and is accusing those who supplied the corrective context of being the “real” purveyors of disinformation. Take this as a glimpse of what’s coming.....

All this is a sign of what the Democratic nominee could face. It’s no wonder that some Democrats are worried we might even see “deepfake” media manipulations. Imagine such ultra-sophisticated video distortions of Biden’s rambles, retweeted by Trump, and perhaps even by reporters.

Trump views disinformation not as a scourge to be combated in the name of protecting our democracy, but as an ally. In this particular case, Trump has not retweeted the video of Biden — yet. But let’s try to learn from this.

I found an unedited video clip and article at https://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2019/01/today-in-joe-biden-wants-to-means-test-social-secu.html

They quote Biden as saying “Paul Ryan was correct when he did the tax code. What's the first thing he decided to go after? Social Security and Medicare. Now, we need to do something about Social Security and Medicare. That's the only way you can find room to pay for it. I don't know a whole lot of people in the top 1/10 of 1% or top 1% are relying on social security when they retire.”

and they comment "Now, it may be tempting to give Biden a pass on this one because he's only targeting rich people, and he does go on to denounce the GOP tax bill. But the very idea of means-testing Social Security and Medicare, in any way, is anathema to progressives because it opens the door for further changes—some of which will be implemented by the other side. It's supposed to be doctrine among the left that these two programs are untouchable unless they're being expanded, and for Biden to suggest reducing coverage—even if it's just for rich people, at the moment—is shocking and worrisome. Especially when it's accompanied by praise for Paul Ryan, who wanted nothing more for his entire career than to gut these programs..."

Based on this information, I don't see Sirota's statement as inaccurate. (I have not seen an edited video from him) What am I missing?

In the clip Biden says that "the people at the top aren't bad guys." Then who is funding all the lobbyists, Republicans, think tanks and others who who push our legislators to cut services for the poor and middle class and give tax breaks and other subsidies to the rich?

Based on the video clip, it appears that, although Biden supports more progressive taxation, he would cut social security benefits (yes, for rich people) before he would reduce defense spending.

I plan to strongly avoid voting for any candidate who supports austerity measures impacting the poor and retirees without first drastically reducing defense spending, giveaways to the rich (many farm subsidies for example) and raising taxes on the extremely rich. I believe that many of the voters Democrats need to win, especially minorities and young people, agree. That statement will hurt Biden.

copying their techniques.

Just a reminder for newcomers and zealous deniers of what we're talking about:

THE ATLANTIC, March 2019: Bernie Sanders Just Hired His Twitter Attack Dog: David Sirota had been working unofficially for Sanders while savaging the other Democratic candidates on Twitter.

Shortly before he gave speeches launching his 2020 campaign earlier this month, Bernie Sanders emailed his supporters, urging them to “do our very best to engage respectfully with our Democratic opponents—talking about the issues we are fighting for, not about personalities or past grievances. I want to be clear that I condemn bullying and harassment of any kind and in any space.”

What he didn’t include was that one of the people already advising him and helping him write those launch speeches is one of his most famously aggressive supporters online.

Since December, David Sirota has, on Twitter, on the website Capital & Main, and in columns in The Guardian, been trashing most of Sanders’s Democratic opponents—all without disclosing his work with Sanders... He centered many of his attacks on Beto O’Rourke, but he also bashed Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, Joe Biden, Kirsten Gillibrand, Michael Bennet, John Hickenlooper, Mike Bloomberg, and even Andrew Cuomo.

A screenshot of one of the more than 20,000 tweets that Sirota deleted yesterday. [It won't copy but it's the one about how Democrats throw screaming temper tantrums and hate democracy.]

Sirota’s hiring as a senior adviser and speechwriter was announced by the Sanders campaign on Tuesday morning after The Atlantic contacted the campaign and inquired about the undisclosed role Sirota held while attacking other Democrats.

Busted! Not that this ruthless, dishonest-politics side of Sanders was not at all new, it's decades old, and busted long before.
