Joe Biden would consider a Republican VP.

Last edited Mon Dec 30, 2019, 04:30 PM - Edit history (2)

@JoeBiden was asked if he would consider choosing a Republican running mate if he is nominee for a show-of-force unity ticket:

“I would” Biden said but added he couldn’t think of anyone at the moment.

Update to add longer quote from CNN:
"The answer is I would, but I can't think of one now," Biden replied. "Let me explain that. You know there's some really decent Republicans that are out there still, but here's the problem right now ... they've got to step up." https://www.cnn.com/2019/12/30/politics/joe-biden-running-mate-republican/index.html

Update to add a quote from NYT:
"There are some really decent Republicans that are out there still, but here's the problem right now of the well-known ones: They've got to step up."

He's solidifying his center-right support.

I have to say though, as much as I like Biden, I'm hoping our move left in the house and the momentum it created will brings us a Sanders or Warren win. It's time for real change. Positive, moral and ethical change.

Once upon a time in California I used to like Mayor Richard Riordan of LA. Not sure I would vote for him over a Dem, but I liked him and many of his political positions.

PBO's biggest mistake, and he'll be the first to admit it, is that he kept trying to craft policies that should have generated bipartisan support. He eventually realized that the GOP was a lost cause, but it took some time.

If Biden is just paying lip service in the hopes of peeling off some Republican voters who are disgusted with Trump, I'm good with it. But if he's signaling that he still thinks that you can reason with elected Republicans, that's a huge problem.

Biden has been fighting the GOP for Decades. The last thing he wants is a GOP VP. The VP determines the vote in the Senate in ties. There is no way Biden wants a Republican in that position. A Republican will never be Biden's VP. He's just trying to appear fair-minded.

No chance he'll pick a Republican VP. But he smart enough to to rule it out.

Mon Dec 30, 2019, 04:43 PM
Dec 2019

but most of them are too old to fit as VP for a septuagenarian president. Bob Gates comes to mind having served for decades and knowing that Obama thought enough of him to retain him as SecDef.

I still think a VP pick for Biden needs to be a woman, and there are very few republican women who I can think of. Women who are still republicans at this point are likely too far right to ever consider.

I can only think of one woman on the Republican bench who has potential right now as a national candidate. That's Nikki Haley. She's a really odd case in that she was strongly against Trump, and then accepted a spot in his administration. She had some public clashes with him and ended up resigning in what seemed like a protest, but also seems to still have good relations with them. She's also been pretty adamantly pro-life, but still probably left of the median republican position these days.

She opposed and blocked bathroom legislation in SC, which wasn't a popular move there.

Just as a hypothetical, if Biden were to win and really wanted to go with a ticket that included a Republican I think she's about the best you could hope for. She also seems ambitious enough that she might be willing to be part of that ticket.

It would outrage the twitter crowd I'm sure, although I'm not sure how many of that group plans to vote for anything not named Sanders anyway. She'd make it hard to use abortion to keep evangelicals in formation around Trump given the moderate stance the ticket would have there. She would help in all of the places where Biden is going to be stronger as well. It make NC, FL, and GA all better chances that that probably flows into TX and Arizona as well. Honestly she'd play really well in all of those suburban enclaves that democrats are putting their hopes in, and she probably cuts the margins in rural areas some as well.

I know a hypothetical Biden/Haley ticket wouldn't excite the progressive wing of the party, but at the same time they need to understand that the alternative is a Trump that doesn't have any political ramifications to worry about. He doesn't have to worry about being reelected and can pretty much just do whatever he wan't, to an even worse level than he's doing now. Honestly though, I don't think it's the progressives that are going to decide this, or any national election anyway given their geographic concentrations in very blue areas. The moderates and minorities in swing states are where things will be decided and this ticket probably does well there.

Before everyone gets mad at me, it's just a hypothetical. I don't think this is going to happen. I'm just playing devils advocate here.

You seem to be upset that there are great deal of Obama and Clinton supporters who will call out multiple attacks on Biden. It's because of those attacks by Sanders supporters and by Sanders himself that guarantee that very few more voters will join Sanders rank and file.

And without an influx of new supporters, Sanders will never win the primary.

But I'm sure as a devoted and passionate Democrat, you will vote blue no matter who.

If Biden is the nominee, I’ll crawl across broken glass to vote for him. That said, I fervently wish he possessed the ability to keep his mouth shut for the fraction of a second it would take to come up with a semi well-considered response. Did he learn nothing in 8 years with Barack Obama?

At the very least, he could have qualified his answer by saying he would consider a Republican who had expressed outspoken disagreement with the corruption and devisive, anti-democratic, anti-Constitution, anti-American values of the Trumpian GOP.

Palmer Report

@PalmerReport
Joe Biden did NOT say he’s considering a Republican running mate. He said he’d consider a Republican, but he can’t think of any. He was diplomatically dispatching with a question that was designed to trip him up. He answered fine, but the media is now lying about what he said.

Theoretical affirmative, practically impossible.

Answer: No.

Same for Biden. A rhetorical answer to a rsounding impossibility.

Does anyone here *really* think Joe Biden is going to pick a Republican as his VP?

This is an innocuous rhetorical tack to show independent and slightly right-of-center Republicans that he doesn't write them off as worthy of respect.

The essence of Joe's answer--in principle I would select the person who's right for the job, but I can't think of any Republicans who meet that description--is perfectly fine, and should be comforting for a nation that currently has a batshit lunatic in the Oval Office. "I would never select a Republican" is something all our candidates obviously think, but they're not going to put it in those terms. Sorry, they're just not. Besides, Biden didn't volunteer this. He was at a townhall, and he just happened to be the one who was asked.

I am currently a Warren person (with Buttigieg being a close second), so I'm not reflexively defending Biden. But goddamn, this is a stupid controversy.
