Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhat some on the left (Michael Moore) are saying is...Ignore minority voters
We know the so called centrist candidate he refers to. That candidate currently leads with both African American and Latino voters, without both of which the Democrats have zero chance of ever winning an election, especially if they come out in unenthusiastic numbers.
Ignore the will of African American and Latino voters and go with someone on the far left who won't excite the party's actual core 'base' and will turn off any swing voters? Good luck in your UK Labour party goals.
Michael Moore is an attention whore who was wrong in 2012 and right in 2016, but if Democrats lose in 2020, it won't be because we had a 'moderate' at the top of the ticket.
You should also be careful about taking your most loyal voters for granted.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
Latinos are likely going for Bernie. And minorities as a whole are split. Nobody is trying to ignore them. They are trying to win their votes. And Bernie is succeeding.

(3,629 posts)...the D candidate is. Biden will be fine. Pete, Liz, or Bernie would be fine. The reason is that Trump only barely won the election last time -- even with the help of the electoral college, the bots and propaganda, and all the rest. He can't afford to lose a single voter who voted for him last time. And he's lost a LOT of those voters, and it's hard to see where he has picked up any new ones. Suppression tactics are only good for a few 10K votes at best. Trump can't afford to lose a single state he won last time, and there are FOUR where he's in serious trouble and several others which already look shaky.
Michael Moore knows the people he grew up around and if he issues a warning it would be foolish to ignore it. That doesn't mean he's right, but it might mean that all of our candidates should pay attention to what he's saying. We ignored him last time and it didn't work out so well. Other forces may be more important this time -- I think they will be -- but that doesn't make Moore an idiot who can be safely ignored.

(5,969 posts)Bush barely won in 2000, in fact, he would have lost had all ballots been counted. And as President, he continued being the bumbling idiot. No way would he win reelection, I was sure. And then he won with a higher margin.

(4,973 posts)The premise of the Common Dreams piece he wrote was "If Obama cannot replicate youth voter turnout and Romney continues to raise enormous amounts of cash, the American people should get used to the words, "President Romney".
I agree with that, even in hindsight.
In the Rolling Stone article he appears to be responding to a dis by Obama or his campaign, but basically encourages Obama to get more aggressive and progressive in his campaign.
In hindsight, I also agree with that. It doesn't make me want to bash him like some here seem to love to do.

(92,219 posts)usual publicity show appearances where he was more definitive, but I cannot find it now.
What he conveniently ignores is every swing state Hillary loss by less than 1%, and Jill Stein received 1% in those states.
It was close, and his so-called "prediction" was actually his usual, the "Democrats are going to lose unless they listen to me" nonesense
At the women's march he made an divisionary ass out of himself trying to spew his divisionary "anti-establishment" rant, until Ashley Judd cut him off right in the middle, and brought the focus back to unity and women. His predictions in that episode also proved wrong as the midterm elections demonstrated.
Why do some bash him? Because of what happened in 2000. When he said a vote for Gore is a vote for bush, and other places
He is NOT a uniting figure at all. The only thing he does is divide Democrats, and that is one thing we don't need in 2020
Obama did just fine in 2008 and 2012 without Mr. Moore's guidance

(68,586 posts)and will fall in line...only the under 35 vote matters and must be courted by giving them whatever they want. Of course not many of them vote regularly so it is likely we will lose a general, but at least they had a pure candidate. After all many of them equate not getting their candidate as the nominee as worse than losing a general and giving Trump four more years.
Today many breathlessly insist that Biden must honor a subpoena from slime-ball McConnell who along with the president has ignored any such documents when requested by Democrats. This would in fact help Trump in his bid to escape any justice and no doubt help Trump win a second term. But of course it might hurt Biden so some are more than good with that. The only words for this sort of behavior towards loyal allies and Vice President Biden is ....fucked up.

(13,870 posts)"And so, our side has got to take this by the reins, and its got to have the courage of our convictions to fight this. And if we do this, then he wont win the electoral states. Remember, Hillary only lost Michigan by two votes per precinct. Thats it. And its not because Lunch Bucket Joe stayed home, you know, or voted for Trump. Its because the when they talk about the working class, Amy, this just drives me crazy. Oh, you know, Trump won all these working-class votes in Michigan and Pennsylvania. No. What happened was, is that the Democratic Party didnt stand up in the way that they should have for what the youth wanted, for what people of color needed. And there were 90,000 people in Michigan, almost 90,000, who went to the polls, mostly Democrats, in very large numbers of them, in Detroit, Flint, Pontiac, Saginaw these are all black cities, majority black. They stood in line in the cold for two to three hours to vote. They went in there, and they voted for state rep, state Senate, county commission. We dont have dog catcher. We have drain commissioner, the person in charge of the sewage. Thats the lowest name on the ballot. They stood there. They voted for the Democrats all down ballot and left the top box blank. She only lost Michigan by 10,000, 11,000 votes. Ninety thousand wanted to send a message to the Democratic Party: You forgot us a long time ago out here, and we will not put up with this anymore. Were not going to vote for Trump, but were not going to tolerate you sending us another Republican-lite Democrat.
