Democratic senators swarm Iowa, promise creative campaigning as impeachment trial looms

Just as U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar wrapped up a talk inside a crowded Johnston cafe, a voter shouted out a final question: Would a Senate impeachment trial mess up her presidential campaign?

It wasn’t the first time she’d been asked, she said, adding that she trusted caucusgoers to not hold her duties in Washington against her.

“I know Iowans are really smart, and you’ll understand if people have to do their jobs,” she said to cheers in November.

With President Donald Trump impeached for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress just a month and a half before the Iowa caucuses, five U.S. senators competing for the Democratic nomination will serve as jurors in a trial that will determine whether he is removed from office.
