Poll: Viewers say Biden won the debate (I think the bigger story is Andrew Yang ranked 3rd)

Biden 23%
Sanders 16%
Yang 12%
Klobuchar 11%
Buttigieg 10%
Warren 9%

...
According to a poll conducted by Morning Consult and POLITICO, a plurality of viewers — 23 percent — found that Biden performed the best at the Dec. 19 Democratic presidential debate, held in Los Angeles. Sen. Bernie Sanders came in second at 16 percent. This is the first time viewers chose Biden as the best performer since the first primary debate in June.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, meanwhile, a top contender in the race for the Democratic nomination, trailed behind her colleagues, with only 9 percent saying she performed the best. Mayor Pete Buttigieg (10 percent), Sen. Amy Klobuchar (11 percent) and Andrew Yang (12 percent) all received higher percentages. Only 4 percent of respondents put billionaire Tom Steyer as the top-performing debater.

But when it comes to candidates who respondents felt had given an “excellent” or “good” debate performance, Sanders won out with 53 percent over Biden’s 50 percent.

Democratic primary voters gave similar ratings of the candidates’ performances, with 27 percent saying Biden gave the best performance, 18 percent for Sanders and 12 percent for Warren.

2. I expected Klobuchar to score better

FWIW this poll is full of "surprises". I'm not surprised that Biden did so well, he had a good night. Yes Yang is a surprise, so is Buttigieg not doing that well. And it is a surprise that Sanders edged out Biden among respondents who assigned "excellent " or "good" ratings, and that Sanders did that much better than Warren.

Well, it was one poll of one debate.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

Klobuchar, Buttiegieg, and Warren were in a statistical tie.

Another sampling would have been likely to have produced different rankings because they are so closely divided.

Also, the article doesn't say how the poll was conducted (online or a true random sampling of the population) so it's hard to know how much weight to give it.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

6. The question includes Republican debate watchers

I think Yang benefited from the fact that Morning Consult included Republicans in its question.

In the debate, Yang said Democrats should "stop being obsessed with impeachment". That would explain why Republican and right leaning Independents likely have Yang thumbs up.

With Gabbard gone, they had less choices.
Also, Republicans may have also been aware of the pre-debate news that Yang said he would consider pardoning Trump.

Note that asking Democratic primary watchers alone, Warren jumps to third.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
