Iowa's StormLake Times: Warren "developed the most extensive agenda" to lift up rural Americans

The Storm Lake Times, led by Pulitzer Prize winner Art Cullen, on Wednesday endorsed U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren for president — a highly sought-after endorsement for candidates who want to win over rural voters.

In his endorsement, Cullen wrote Warren has "developed the most extensive agenda" to lift up rural Americans. Rural Storm Lake is in deep red Buena Vista County, where registered Republicans outnumber registered Democrats 36% to 26%, and about 38% are independents.
.......

Cullen is the firebrand editor of The Storm Lake Times, the newspaper started by his brother in 1990. He earned the 2017 Pulitzer prize for editorial writing, which thrust him out of the 10,700-person town and into the national spotlight.

After Democrats suffered embarrassing political losses across the Midwest in 2016, he became sought after as one of the nation's leading progressive voices on rural life and politics.

Presidential candidates contacted him personally, and national media outlets frequently call on him to explain the way rural Americans perceive national political developments.

"I think they realize this election is going to be decided in the Midwest," Cullen said at the March forum on rural issues.

The policies she's forwarding will a) work, and b) materially improve the lives of almost every American.

Warren is great.

score a positive story in a small town midwest newspaper. Storm lake is a sea of Conservative Farmers and town folks.

You are not going to get their vote unless you stop by and ask for it. Watched first hand how the Dem Candidate in 2016 hit the mega cities and we paid the price.

Still tragically undone are our various plans to attack whole rural regions that need uplifting such as coal country, as well as the usual kind of rural recipient areas that are expected to yield best resturns for investment, and also the 10-20-30 plan to attack intractable, long-term pockets of poverty.

So often Democratic administrations pass those last over because the money's needed where it'll do "a lot more good." There's never enough money to meet all the needs, and it's always sensible in the short view, but we're looking back with a long view of long neglect and had decided to dedicate a portion of our budget to these pockets.

Btw, SC congressman Jim Clyburn is still in congress and still determined to make his 10-20-30 plan happen.

It's worth noting that Sen. Warren could conceivably become Biden's VP choice and perhaps head up implementation of our attacks on rural poverty -- after congress legislates the plans of course. That's a happy stretch, but she'd be great. And Warren was Biden's one strong choice for VP when he considered running in 2015. They even met to discuss it...

Politico, "The liberal firebrand draws nods and even a few cheers on a trip through rural West Virginia." May 11, 2019.

KERMIT, W. Va. — It was a startling spectacle in the heart of Trump country: At least a dozen supporters of the president — some wearing MAGA stickers — nodding their heads, at times even clapping, for liberal firebrand Elizabeth Warren.

The sighting alone of a Democratic presidential candidate in this town of fewer than 400 people — in a county where more than four in five voters cast their ballot for Trump in 2016 — was unusual. Warren’s team was apprehensive about how she’d be received.

About 150 people gathered at the Kermit Fire & Rescue Headquarters Station to hear the Massachusetts senator and former Harvard professor talk about what she wants to do to fight the opioid epidemic. Trump-supporting college students in baggy t-shirts, housewives in pearls, and the fire chief dressed in uniform joined liberal retirees wearing rainbow “Persist” shirts and teachers with six-figure student loan debt...

to rural voters. They lie. She has a great talent to reach these people and the most comprehensive plans to help them succeed in their daily lives.

They know they are lying about her, but, their paycheck demands they continue to spread lies and fear.

she resonates reaches more and more Americans in spite of opposition from the power structure.

The notion even prevalent here that she can't appeal to the great Midwest and middle America is bunk.

And there is no time to wait, to put this off another election cycle or two with the way things are deteriorating.

Amen.
