Bernie Sanders rides the bus Downtown with UPMC worker, talks "quote unquote nonprofits"

in Uptown cafe

Drawing a comparison to UPMC, Mr. Sanders said he wanted to prove that nonprofits owe a responsibility to their communities, touting the agreement he eventually reached with the Burlington hospital that made them more responsive to the needs of residents.

"A lot of places that are quote unquote nonprofits ... who pay their CEOs very handsome salaries, indistinguishable from for-profit...those hospitals have an obligation and that's something we'll deal with," Mr. Sanders said.

"It's not that you don't want to pay your bills," Ms. Peston said. "You can't pay your bills and still try to live on what they're paying you."

"And the irony is, you work there," Mr. Sanders responded.

That always seems to come up in the discussion of non-profits but it doesn't make any sense to me. Even a multimillion dollar salary is a drop in the bucket compared to what for-profits do to return corporate income to shareholders. It's not even the same ballgame.
