Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI am really sick of America not ever having had a female president.
Maybe Ill die before we get one.
I also would not be surprised if the first female U.S. president will end up being a Republican.

If our first woman president is a woman, I hope that she, at last, will be the one to end the official misogyny of the Republican party we know today!

(6,377 posts)That's why I feel Nikki Haley could be dangerous in the future.
Republicans love her. Young female. Independent female voters would like her. Lean Dem female voters who aren't excited about the Democratic nominee might be enticed to vote for her.

Republicans would love to do this just so they can gloat about it.

(35,077 posts)Can you imagine the moral damage that would be done to our country if we had a female president who had 5 kids with 3 different men?
Can you imagine the damage that would be done to our country if we had a president who responded to criticisms with conspiracy theories and personal attacks because she can't respond logically, only emotionally? My God!
(And just so we're clear everyone, )

But if you are unhappy maybe hell pick a woman you like.

(115,716 posts)Let's say a man - looks like Biden at this point, though not a certainty yet - gets the nomination. Let's say he chooses a woman as his running mate (and I think that's likely to happen) - Klobuchar, Harris, Warren, maybe someone else. We can be pretty sure that Biden would serve only one term on account of his age, which would set up his VP very nicely to run in 2024. Yes, she'd be getting on boost on account of having been VP, but she would still have to run for the presidency on her own merits. I'd be OK with that.

(6,044 posts)They stood up to the military junta that murdered their children and stole their grandchildren and were ultimately successful in finding truth.
The grandfathers for many cultural reasons could not have accomplished it.
I think there are some parallels to our situation.
I saw it in Katie Porter when she questioned Jamie Dimon and noted his suppressed fury that she was calling him to account in the name of Citibank workers unable to support their children on the miserable wages.
Few male representatives could have accomplished what she did in that hearing.
In this election cycle we need to build on the success of 2018. What is going to save our country is the full participation of women and the underrepresented.

Having a Midwesterner on the ticket could make a difference in Wisconsin.
Of course, when Amy comes from behind, she could choose him for her VP!

Clinton is a woman of strong principles when it come to Democracy and Human Rights. Putin hates her for standing on those principles.
I think it would be great if Biden spoke out forcefully on Russia now, and I mean forcefully.
The FBI investigation is ongoing - last I read they had gotten into the data in almost every state.
What is our best chance for turning things around now is getting more Democratic woman in Congress-we need parity-at a minimum.
I personally am not disappointed-like many women the "disappointment" stage is long past.
We know we have to lead the fight; not play second fiddle.
Depending upon others going along to get along has brought us to where we are today. It is not a mistake we are going to continue to make.

(6,044 posts)Bain Capital Mitt Romney was ridiculed for in 2012 because he described Russia as a major threat-it turned out he was right and he will waste no time in advertising that. Nikki Haley already seems to be running and seeking the "honorable confederacy legacy" voters to make up for having removing that flag in South Carolina.

(43,173 posts)America was a political entity protected by a legal system, Constitution, treaties, natural geographic boundaries, and will of the people. At the current time, all of those protections have holes blown in them. So I don't know how much sovereignty we have in the bank anymore.

(58,785 posts)RW authoritarian governments, both religious and secular, are very strongly conservative, male dominated, and solidly misogynistic. In North America they're all white. And fascistic RW governments are ARCHconservative.
Right now the Republicans are packing federal and state supreme courts with hard-core conservative (and religious) originalists and textualists (Examples: No right under the constitution to birth control if a state wants to make it illegal to boost its labor force. No right to a government-run retirement or healthcare program under the constitution.)
This election is not about which healthcare system we care to choose or whether we should finally elect a woman president, or another black man, or perhaps a nice purple.
It's about whether we'll continue to have the power to choose at all. We are at a point where we are going to either let it happen here or stop it.

(10,877 posts)Could she possibly be worse than Trump.
I had high hopes that Warren or Harris (or even Klobuchar but NOT Gabbard) would be our nominee.
But, Im afraid it is not to be again.
I hate to use the word settle but I do think we will be nominating Biden.
I kind of understand.
He is the safe choice and most polling shows that he has the best chance to win the states that have to flip from 2016.
I get that and I love Joe. Hes a great man.
I just wanted a woman as our nominee.
Who knows if he might not just pick a female Veep that he would let takeover in his fourth year by resigning and giving her a leg up on 2024.
Id love that. But, thats just me.
Like everyone else here, priority One is ousting Trump. If Joe is the one to do it, I will enthusiastically support him.

(5,969 posts)Clinton wins in a landslide solely based on her capabilities which should be the main criteria. That of course doesn't deny the fact that this office has been dominated by a specific group.
On the other side, it also feels that if this point is brought forward in the primary only if your preferred candidate happens to be female, it kind of cheapens the point. It's an important issue but you can't tell how honest it is pursued if, for instance, those who claim that they hope for a female President now, didn't believe the same in the 2016 primaries and preferred the typical white male over a uniquely qualified woman.
I think if Biden wins the primary, he will choose a female VP, probably Harris. After Biden's term(s), she'd be in a great position for the Presidency.

We need to work on winning hearts and minds. Also while I personally like Harris, she did not do well in the primary. I think Tammy Duckworth is a better choice for VP.

(1,701 posts)I always support the person I think is most qualified for office, irrespective of gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, or any such factors.
That said, I was thrilled when Barack Obama, in my estimation, was the best person for the job in 2008 and felt the same when I voted for HRC in 2016.
Like most liberal Democrats, I support a diverse party and like seeing diverse candidates holding office.
I've not gotten over 2016. What a loss for our nation.
