MADISON, Wis. (AP) Senators from three states have introduced legislation to lift federal protections for gray wolves in Wyoming, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan and return responsibility for managing those populations to the states.
The bill introduced Tuesday comes from senators Ron Johnson and Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, John Barrasso and Enzi of Wyoming, and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota.
The Interior Department has tried several times to take wolves in the four states off the endangered list but has been blocked by the courts. Both the Senate bill and one introduced in the House last week would prevent the courts from overruling the decision.
Similar proposals stalled out last year, partly due to White House opposition. But farm and rancher groups and other wolf hunting supporters hope that changes under the Trump administration.

(1,086 posts)in the mean boss frenzy at the start of her campaign, was that she threw a binder onto her desk in anger/frustration and it skidded off and hit a staff member. That has since morphed into she threw a book at her staff.

maybe taking pragmatism to far. Although I'm sure that her body person never forgot the silverware again!
The whole mean boss thing is a very interesting story that after the election could actually be explored. It will say a lot about how Washington and the Senate works. It is not as straight forward as an election cycle allows. For example there is and was a real gender skew to staff turnover. At one point 7 of the top 10 in turn over were women. That says something. Also Amy probably has a higher percentage of first timers in her staff then the majority. I know she brings a lot of young staffers from home.
I actually know several of her former staffers (and a couple current ones). So I was in a position to get a better read on it.

(2,809 posts)Wolves play a key role in keeping ecosystems healthy. They help keep deer and elk populations in check, which can benefit many other plant and animal species. The carcasses of their prey also help to redistribute nutrients and provide food for other wildlife species, like grizzly bears and scavengers. Scientists are just beginning to fully understand the positive ripple effects that wolves have on ecosystems.

(1,086 posts)We are starting to have pack's becoming semi-domesticated in that they as any intelligent being are starting to limit their ranges and rely on farm animals. While to an extent that would be normal especially if there was a dwindling natural source of food, But that is not the case as Hunting is in general decline and as you note management of the deer and elk herds needs to account for wolves. But, some of that is not happening and several packs are becoming dependent on domesticated food supplies and so limiting their ranges.
I'm not saying this is the correct move right now. However the issue is not necessarily as straight forward as in appears. Allowing some flexibility at the state level, particularly here in Minnesota seems a good move. I don't know the reasoning behind this by those involved in the proposal. But I'm certainly willing to hear them out.

(36,352 posts)It's a rather common sight to see a dead deer on the side of the road or in the ditch that had been hit by a vehicle where I live. Feeding on the carcasses are crows, ravens, turkey vultures and bald eagles.
"Review of published research and preliminary data analysis suggests bears are having a small but measurable impact on fawn mortality and that wolves have a small impact on the mortality rate of adult does....
This early analysis appears to say that impacts on deer populations associated with bears and wolves are clearly minor relative to impacts associated with hunting by humans, said Van Deelen. "

(3,257 posts)Personally, I would trust the Minnesota DNR to manage the wolves in Minnesota, but I have no faith in the other states. It's typical Klobuchar. She takes all sides most of the time. It's only an issue in the far north of Minnesota, but she will get 3the votes thereeeeeeeeeeeeeeeas the population that actually has wolves are for control of the population of wolves because they do sometimes prey on domestic animals.

(4,316 posts)and I believe it is almost always hunting dogs. The others must be wild dogs. Wolves don't go near human establishments.
By comparison there are 4.7 million dog bites on humans each hear. Then there are probably thousands of dog on dog attacks and deaths.
