Joe Biden Says He Doesn't Want Republicans To Get "Clobbered" In 2020

In a bizarre turn of events, Joe Biden admitted that he’s hoping a decent number of Republicans win reelection next year because he believes that we need the Republicans to balance us out. There was a time in this country where that statement could have been true, but that is in the distant past compared to where we are now. The pendulum is swinging back to the left, and that is where it needs to go in order to right the wrongs of the past few decades.

I'm afraid Joe Biden does not understand. He just doesn't get it.
If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

[link:http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/12/joe-biden-america-needs-the-republican-party.html|

Describing his plan to “work things out” with Senator Lindsey Graham to pass legislation if elected, Biden shared his worry that the Republican Party could suffer too great a loss in 2020, wondering what would happen if the GOP got “clobbered” in November and Democrats were able to genuinely wield power for the first time in a decade.

“I’m really worried that no party should have too much power,” he told a crowd in Decorah, according to BuzzFeed News. “You need a countervailing force.” That idea is a hallmark of independent voters splitting their ticket in pursuit of so-called checks and balances on the party in power. But as New York’s Ed Kilgore notes, that impulse can “produce the very abuses of power they claim to fear.”

I for one will vote for Biden if he becomes the nominee, even though I don't think he should be, but if he wins the nomination he will have my support, and I am sure of many, or all from DU. At the end of the day we do want to get rid of trump, and of the many republicans who if they stay in power on the Senate, like Joe would like, then bills will only accumulate in the Senate...Not sure why Joe doesn't see that.

But anyway, if Joe wins the nomination I will vote for him, I am not a fanatic, so if my choice candidate doesn't win I will support the Democratic party. I do get very upset when my choice candidate does or says things that are counterproductive to Democrats and progressives, and I say something about it. I guess not being a fanatic liberates me and helps me be more objective.

in the next election (I'm paraphrasing here)...where in the world does Biden think that republicans will treat us (democrats) the same way (don't beat them too hard, don't want to wipe out the party)? When a party becomes so toxic to the beliefs that most Americans hold, that should say something, that perhaps it's time to cast aside old party affiliations and go on to something better. The republican party is toxic.

I don't think I'm wrong but if the republicans had their way, they'd outlaw the democratic party and make it a criminal enterprise. It's not too unbelievable, being that they enacted anti voter laws just about everywhere, restrictions on voting right and left, redrawn legislative maps for easier elections for their republican cronies, etc.

I've got no problem with his words. It sounds like he's being diplomatic. It's important that he also get Republicans who hate Trump to vote for him. If they perceive him as being someone who wants to "DESTROY" the Republican party, then they may circle their wagons and vote to protect the party, rather than vote to help oust Trump.

He of course won't find anything, so I'm sure he'll be making something up with Shulkin and the other dirty despot whose name escapes me at the moment that funneled dirty money into US elections. .

As someone said up thread, this is NOT Joe's father's party. These fuckers are treasonous THUGlicans who could care LESS about voting rights, civil rights, the rule of any laws, the Constitution, or if this country is turned into a 3rd rate, ruskie, banana-republic country being run by them: white, male, right-winged Amerikkkan oligarchs.

Holding hands with and singing kumbuya with these THUGlicans doesn't work and never will. Joe, THUGlicans don't want Dems or anyone against their tRumputin/nazi/fascistic agenda to VOTE, or have their votes count if they vote which means that even if Dems come out in a HUGE numbers to vote for you in the GE--if nominated--fascist fatso will say that he won't accept YOU being POTUS because you & son are dirty, Burisma, mention crooked Hillary, lbring up lovers Strzok and Page, Dirty cops, Comey which means he'll be STAYING on as potus because of this election HOAX pulled off by you, Dems, Ukraine, lovers Strzok/Paige, crooked Hillary rinse and repeat etc. so he has NO alternative but to NOT be leaving the White House. Do you think that you can sit down with Senate THUGlicans and convince them to ditch the dirty son of a bitch? putin has more sway over THUGlicans/tRump than you do Joe.

That wasn't his point. His point was that he wanted politics to work the way it did ion 1985. So do a lot of us. But most of us have come to realize that the Republican Party of today is not the Republican Party of 1985. Joe seems to be missing his youth and living in hopes of a kumbayah administration with republicans. Ain't gonna happen.

Whichever Democrat beats trump will spend the first four years in constant impeachment. Just watch the hearings going on today, and tell me you think that a Biden administration will somehow make gaetz and gohmert act like decent human beings.

How dare that Biden will try to get things done. I’m sure Bernie will just yell at the Senate to get things done

Well, not really.

I suppose he forgets about gerrymandering schemes from people like Tom Delay and Karl Rove for a “permanent Republican majority”

We need someone that won’t play with the people who would be very happy with one party rule.

"I suppose he forgets about..."
Sounds as easy to forget as which candidate we support.
"I suppose" it really depends on the direction of the wind at any given moment.

from. We do need a two-party system. But the cult that calls itself the Republican Party needs to be destroyed, then it either needs to re-invent itself or we need a new political party. No one party including the Democrats should have unlimited power.

political system. I would not trust any political party including my own with unfettered political power. I think what we need is for the Republicans to get wiped out in the next election, then they need to reorganize and re-emerge as a responsible political force. So I disagree with Joe and hope they do get clobbered. But we will need a viable two-party system in the long run.

Obama’s tenure. The most productive time of Obama’s presidency, from a legislative perspective, was during the period of time democrats controlled the presidency, house and senate.

Therefore, Joe’s conjecture isn’t based in reality.

There is no balance in having a progressive party that wants to improve lives alongside a party that seeks the destruction of government.

The gop has become a party of nihilists. I would like to see all of them voted out of office. And any structural advantages the GOP has created for itself need to be swept away.

Biden seems naive here. It may be a political calculation to try to gin up republican votes. But I think it could have the opposite effect of lulling moderates to sleep.

I’m tired of Biden making it so difficult for me to support him. I’m committed to voting blue no matter who. I just don’t like when Biden does his aw-shucks-get-along-with-republicans routine

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
