CNN Surprised To Find Bernie Support In Kentucky

I think people are underestimating the grass root support, cross platform, for Sanders. Even in the Red States.
He is waaaaaaay ahead of other candidates by a million + in donations from individuals. I don't care what the polls say. I'd like to see either Warren or Sanders win, but Sanders has more experience, and has the largest base to work with.

This video shows that many in the Red States are dissatisfied with Trump and Mitch etc..but they feel, warranted or not, that Biden is a part of that same Washington establishment that wouldn't help them much either. That may be a twisted way to look at it, but isn't winning the ultimate goal?

Sanders would humiliate Trump in the votes in 2020, if he was our nominee. Because he'd (hopefully) have 100% support from the "vote blue no matter who" Democratic voters, but he also would scoop up a lot of independents, and Never Trumpers that would put him over the top. Way over IMO.

While when Bernie dares to criticize some unhelpful stance or compromise from the Democratic party, it is NOT hurting the party's chances, it is improving them. Whether you agree or disagree with some criticisms or another, it will gain way more voters respect, across all platforms, than convince a traditional Democratic voter to stay home or vote for another party.

10. I am getting close to a decision. I take it seriously

I don't rush into that decision lightly. Still a lot of time. I support any candidate that not only identifies as a progressive, but their actions and work support that. That would be Sanders or Warren. I wanted to wait to see just how Warren did in her first foray. And she continues to do well, and continues to impress me.

But yes, if I had to say today, Bernie is my first choice. He has the most donations. (Not the most money) Every other candidate is in the dust on that factor. He's million + ahead of the pack. . That is an important fact. And he continues to do well DESPITE the best efforts of the MSM to either ignore him, or scoff at his platform.

Biden, while I do believe he'd beat Trump, would be a huge mistake. I doubt he'd have a second term. He'd only lead the party backwards and convince many of these kinds of voters to go back to the GOP, as he'd be perceived, as just another establishment politician. Especially if he only worked to keep the status quo. The status quo is what voters are rebelling against. Voters today respect a leader that is actually going to DO SOMETHING for them, like Medicare for All, or going after Wall Street's accesses.

If Bernie were running as an Independent in this two-party country, he would lose. He could split the vote in a close election, especially as corrupt as our country's election process is. The Democratic Party is lucky he is running as a Democrat, so that he will not be on the ticket as an Independent candidate.

I am a Bernie supporter this time around, just as I was last time. I voted for him in the primary. Who are you to say Bernie does not deserve to be elected? I can trot out lots of candidates, by name, and say the same thing, and give solid reasons for my views. I don't do that. Why? Because it isn't right. I don't like it when people say things like you have stated about my favorite candidate, and I am not going to do that to supporters of other Democratic candidates. We all deserve the right to make up our own minds.

Every candidate, in my view, has the right to tell the nation why s/he would be a great president. Of course, I don't agree with all of the candidates. Some of them are simply not qualified for the job. Some of them are people I do not think will take the country in the direction that I think will benefit the majority of its citizens, either at all, or quickly enough to do some good during a term or two in office.

I voted for Hilary Clinton in the national election simply because she was the only reasonable choice since she was the Democratic candidate. I've voted for candidates I did not otherwise support, Democrats all, in previous elections, too.

I vote the straight D ticket, because what else is an intelligent person to do?

Comments like yours nauseate me. I can vote for whomever I please, even if doing so makes me know I am not being true to myself. Which is how I felt last time, and some other times, too.

My desire is to be able to vote for a candidate I fully support. I doubt that will ever happen. In the meanwhile, just be glad Bernie is not running as a third-party candidate, and right there on the ballots with the other two party's candidates.

Bernie could split the vote if he were running as a third-party candidate, instead of as a Democrat. It's happened before. It could happen again. Here are two examples:

Obviously in a primary race, any Presidential candidate should be on TV as much as they can.

Even so......on your list I count about 20 TV appearances, all year. Still kind of sparse for a top candidate.

But back to the topic, I couldn't find some record of Moore's appearances, so I googled "michael moore CNN 2019", and "michael moore MSNBC 2019"

Three for MSNBC

Maybe he appeared on other networks too, but those two would be the main ones he'd be asked to go on.

So again...obviously those two hosts get to speak to the camera every day. And how much do those two guests. McCaskill and Wilson get on as guest pundits? I see them on all the time.

For one, Sanders has lots of support among minorities and women. The issue for him is more generational.

For another, Sanders was fighting for civil rights for black people since the 60s. He supported gay rights in the 80s. Anyone who thinks Sanders doesn't have a "Social Justice Focus" doesn't' really know the man's history.

And finally, maybe dismissing populists as inherently racist (without ANY evidence to that effect) is a bit.. out of touch. The Bernie supporters here said flat out why there's support for him in Kentucky. His position on health care. That isnt exclusive to white people.

who supports civil/gay/women's rights from that perspective, but isn't going to draw a line in the sand the way a social liberal would. Warren for example has the same/similar economic platform as Sanders, yet is disliked intensely (just as much as Hillary was) by the white heartland, because she is a fierce social liberal and a woman.

Basically Sanders would prefer that his voters support civil rights, but if they don't, as long as they support economic leftism - then he thinks that's good enough, as to him economics/class are the 'true oppression', where social issues are merely a side concern at best, and at worst only work to 'divide' the working class. He has given numerous speeches to this effect, about 'identity politics', about reaching out to Trump voters (and downplaying their racism/sexism), about not scaring away the white working class, etc.

Again, a social liberal, or 'social justice warrior' as some of his supporters would characterize it - does not view social justice as a choice but a mandate - the 'long march' of civil rights through the institutions of society, to correct historical inequities. Even a moderate social liberal like Bill Clinton or Obama viewed it this way, merely choosing incrementalism towards this end and making compromises along the way, while still believing in the ultimate goal in the long run.

And Sanders' supporters (who are mainly white) understand all of this on an intuitive level - that he isn't forcing them to accept social justice (in the short or long run), as long as they support his economic leftism and his populist narratives, which (surprise surprise) tend to center the white working class at its struggles and resentments, its small town sensibilities, its aesthetic - just like the old FDR/Dixiecrat Dem party used to.

Yeah much of his focus is on economic issues and that's about the only thing I think you got right.

The guy endorsed gay Marriage in the 80s. Not a lot of politicians were doing that. And that is just one example. There is no incrementalism about his social justice. His politics were formed on social Justice.

Ok you want to know why Sanders is popular with a lot of white people, it's simple. I will tell you as a white guy who has always supported Bernie Sanders.

He doesn't' accept this is a binary choice. Helping rural white people and being for civil rights for non-white/cis/straight isn't an either-or nor does he accept the framing of it as such. Framing that while pushed mostly by Republicans but isn't really challenged by a lot of Democrats.

A lot of rural white people feel abandoned. The Democratic party as a whole seems to have written them off. The only people talking to them were the Republicans who stoked prejudices. The guys in the OP's video flat out explain this.

But then along comes Sanders who says "Rural America does have problems. They arent' imagining it. But it's isn't some black single mom getting food stamps. It's not an immigrant looking for a better life. Its' the rich and powerful who have exploited rural America just like they have exploited everyone else."

The conflict between white rural America and diverse urban America is based on a false narrative.

Maybe someone could explain it better but frankly, I don't' think you have taken the time to listen to Sanders or any of his supporters. Maybe you should.

His populist narratives actually are universal. After Biden, Sanders leads in the African American vote. He is intensely popular with Latinos. Much of his supporters are women. These people aren't' stupid nor monolithic. They can understand their own self interest.

Framing Sander's policies as "for white people" seriously misses all sorts of points.

So before responding (assuming you will) maybe take some time to ask Sanders supporters WHY they support him and his policies.

And maybe ask Sanders supporters who aren't white men. Though you seem to think they are like Unicorns I assure they are actually quite common and perfectly capable of speaking for themselves if politely asked.

Then it will be pointed out that you are a Canadian citizen and can't vote in the U.S. Considering that one of the concerns in the last election and the current election is about foreign interference...well, needless to say some members are already wondering.

My first preferred choice was Beto O'Rourke. You can check that I still remain the host there and posted frequently within that group. After Beto withdrew from the race I was automatically changed to "Undecided" after the admins updated the list of candidates to note that he withdrew. I did post a thank you message between the time he withdrew and before the admins made the change that he withdrew. That group is closed so nobody can post there anymore-- not even myself. In the meantime, please realize that any system can be manipulated and I'm relatively late to the game. I noted that none of the Bernie supporters called out the members that changed their preferences when they had less than honorable intentions. Did you call out any of them?

At some point, I will change back to "Undecided" since I haven't made my final decision, but in the mean time I'm comfortable leaving my preference as is. I still have two or three candidates that remain in consideration and I've completely eliminated several other candidates. Since I don't have to vote until Super Tuesday, I have plenty of time left. I still may not indicate who my choice at that time is either since there is no requirement that we have to divulge our choice on DU.

So have and choose whomever you wish on January 1. What's posted on DU as far as our candidate preference has no significance in the real world.

I would hope that the majority of DU users would understand how close Canada is with the USA, both culturally, economically, major religion, a democratic political system. And we are each others largest trading partners. And realize how invested Canadians are in the political results there. Also that many hopefully realize that this is a global fight. Trump is a huge boil on the world. But someone else will replace him who is just as evil, greedy, and destructive, even if they are smart enough not to look an idiot. Part of why I haven't put any choice under me is precisely because I can't vote there. But it is how DU admin has set it up. So if I continue "undecided" I get called out for not deciding, which has happened. And I look like I'm doing a similar thing as you and Nurse Jackie are doing, by pretending to not endorse anyone but really going for Sanders. (Who by now one could guess would be my choice for your President) I want to support Sanders still, even if not by voting. I can still donate. But on a serious note, you can still donate? To who? I hope that you are referring to DU because you can't donate to any US presidential candidates without breaking federal law. And awhile ago you made a comment about what the US deserves, so I know that brought some scrutiny as to what a Canadian thinks the US deserves.

Unfortunately, even if you have the most noble intentions, there will always be a question mark as to whose interests you are supporting when you are participating on a political discussion board in another country--I would expect similar doubts to be expressed if I participated on a political discussion board in your country which is why I don't. You're definitely welcome to bash Trump and bash the Republican party on DU; however, when it comes down to the primary candidates and most policies you are probably on shaky ground.

As for Sanders supporters being among the smartest, well that is a debatable statement which I don't agree with it, but to each their own. However, it has been noted that they displayed their deviousness as I mentioned in an earlier response. Just because you didn't see it doesn't mean it isn't true and other DUers noticed it also. I'd point you to it, but the author of that OP already reverted back to Bernie as their preferred candidate. Nobody was fooled by that charade.
