Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumReminder: Harris was lauded as "the first Indian-American senator" when she was elected and
sworn in.
That half of her heritage was emphasized.
Some articles also noted that she was the first black US senator from California.
But the "first" attached to her name at the time was about her being Indian-American, and some articles mentioned ONLY her Indian-American heritage, including this McClatchy article in the Sacramento Bee

(108,994 posts)she was certainly viewed by anyone who saw her on the street as a black girl. There are lots of photos here.
And her heritage limited her to living in the redlined area of Berkeley, away from the white people and white schools.
However, it is also true that while she was the 2nd female US Senator of African American descent, she was the first US Senator of Indian descent. Both things are equally true.

(7,529 posts)She has always been known as an AA. Good grief, this is just sad. Joe missteps once again and the apologists try to come up with any excuse other than to look at his problem of thinking on his feet - a very concerning flaw for any candidate wanting to be president. But let's not talk about that.

(49,035 posts)emphasis when Harris won her Senate seat was on her Indian-American heritage.
As a result, it wouldn't be at all surprising if Biden thinks of her as Indian-American first, and as AA secondly.
