Yang Gang keeping their man in the race
Pete Buttigieg has been the unlikely star of the race so far, but relatively unknown entrepreneur Andrew Yang has also exceeded expectations.
He's qualified for all of the debates and kept pace financially with experienced senators like Amy Klobuchar and Cory Booker. In fact, in the third quarter he raised nearly as much as both of them combined.
As the chart below shows, it is small donors (those giving less than $200) that are powering his campaign - mostly fuelled by a devoted internet following known as the "Yang Gang". He'll need that gang to grow offline if he wants to keep his campaign going in 2020 though.

(112,252 posts)is much fairer than choosing winners and losers with the free tuition/cancelled student debt proposals of the other candidates. For that reason, I'm keeping an open mind about Yang while I have already eliminated several other candidates from consideration.

(115,103 posts)is that more people support it, because more people get it. The scarcity mindset doesn't kick in. And a program that benefits literally everyone is much harder to cut let alone kill.
And once markets start registering the extra consumer buying power, it just snowballs.
I've been saying for years that we need a bubble up economy instead of trickle down (Yang says trickle up but I hate that lol), I really hope we get to put this into place. Dems would rule for generations.
Another seriously important benefit, no one falls
through the cracks, and no one has to ensure the often humiliating process of trying to get help from limited, means-tested assistance programs.

(112,252 posts)I'm currently helping my brother with a lot of the computer work and administrative tasks on his new job since his skills are inadequate for the position. I'm essentially bartering my skills away for room and board, lack health insurance, and am being compensated at less than half of the rate (including the room and board) that I would get if I was providing those skills in the job market. My prospects of getting hired for a full-time job are nearly zero because of a long unemployment gap and because I'm over 50. It's humiliating to have to consider minimum wage jobs and jobs that pay less than minimum wage after I was earning an upper-middle class income. It's also humiliating to have to beg for $20 so I can buy syringes or glucose test strips to attempt to stay healthy.
.
I might avoid some of the humiliation and the stress if I were on UBI. Free tuition and debt forgiveness will have no effect on my life since I graduated from college with no debt and free college tuition won't help either since I doubt that any additional courses that I could take would help my employment situation.

(38,958 posts)as it would to so very many others in a variety of circumstances both now and going forward as the job market changes. Being retired with both SS and a good Union Pension I am not in the worst of circumstances, but a UBI would most certainly get spent and recycled into the local economy on all those things that are part of Life's Overhead. I could use a new driveway, replacement windows, replacement flooring, some other work on the house, yard and wouldn't mind a few additional creature comforts along with building up some added savings.
We need a UBI for everyone in this country.

(38,958 posts)It really does speak to his grass roots support. Hopefully he will continue to grow in both coverage and donors.
