Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumDo You Buy That ... Democratic Voters Want A New 2020 Candidate?
The New York Times and The Washington Post recently reported that some influential Democrats are clamoring for new candidates to enter the 2020 presidential race. Sure, there are 17 major candidates1 already running, but Democratic bigwigs are apparently convinced that that isnt enough, and want someone Hillary Clinton, or Sherrod Brown, or John Kerry, or Michael Bloomberg to come to the rescue.
(snip)
I cant read the minds of any of those bold-faced names, all of whom have reportedly been urged by Democratic donors to enter the race. But I think these donors are out to lunch and out of touch: I dont buy that Democratic voters really want another candidate. And even if the voters did, I dont think the new candidate would find it so easy to succeed.
First, Democratic voters are extremely happy with the field as is. According to a July poll by the Pew Research Center, 65 percent of Democrats rate their field as excellent or good. Thats essentially tied with 2008 for the highest enthusiasm Pew has ever found among Democrats:

In the end, though, I think this talk of Clinton or Bloomberg is a sign of two things: first, the media getting bored with the race and searching for a new storyline. And second, the establishments influence is declining as candidates like Warren and Sanders are succeeding without taking their money. Some big donors might simply want back in on the action.

(10,500 posts)The point to this story is to provide people with a vehicle with which to bash Hillary.
And I don't think a new candidate entering the race would necessarily benefit any particular candidate. I certainly don't think it would ensure it.
The only person who could really shake up the race at this point is Al Franken, and unfortunately he isn't going to join it either. We have our field of candidates.

(14,574 posts)Biden is having some difficulty raising money. So the field will narrow soon. I mean, by late February there should be only a couple still standing, and after Super Tuesday, it will be pretty clear who the top candidate or top two candidates are.
I don't know why so many in the media seem to be so worried. My own belief is that after the contentious 2016 primaries, we all took a step back, and this time, people seem much more tolerant of the other candidates. Probably because Trump is such a total criminal, people are barely fighting at all. Getting Trump out is 'job one' as the old Ford commercial says.

(14,574 posts)Biden is not my candidate, but he could beat Trump.
Bernie is not my candidate, but he could beat Trump.
Warren IS my candidate, and she can definitely beat Trump.
We can also say the same about Harris, Buttigieg (who I like a lot), and Klobuchar.
I would not support Bloomberg, and do not think Clinton wants to run at this point. You are also right about the 'easy to succeed' part. At this point the barriers to entry for any new candidate would be immense. The current candidates have all had time to build up ground games in the early states. Someone getting in now would stand little chance unless they had immense name recognition and billions to throw at their candidacy.
