Joe Biden in Fla., Pete Buttigieg in N.Y., Bernie Sanders in Ore.: Who's winning the big-money race
Joe Biden in Fla., Pete Buttigieg in N.Y., Bernie Sanders in Ore.: Whos winning the big-money race in each stateAmericans have poured more than $413.6 million into 2020 presidential campaigns.
But where do all those donors live?
To get a sense of how that money is distributed, The Inquirer broke down large-dollar donations those greater than $200 by state. The analysis reveals regional strength and, in some cases, geographic fund-raising strategy:
Former Vice President Joe Biden, an establishment front-runner whose fund-raising has begun to lag, leads the large-dollar race in 13 states, especially in the Southeast.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, whose powerful small-dollar network of donors has generated big money, is the top recipient in many states and has particular support in the West.
South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg raised more large-dollar money than any other candidate nationwide in the third quarter, but a lot of that was concentrated in Midwestern states as well as New York.
The other top-tier candidate, U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, is the top large-dollar fund-raiser only in her home state of Massachusetts, but shes a common second and third choice of donors in many other states.

....tens of millions of dollars about which we know nothing - who contributed, how much, where do they reside, occupations, employers? The most extreme has more than FORTY TWO million unitemized contributions.

Some of the money was sent from foreign addresses so we don't really know. From I read in the article, only people that contribute $200 or more have to disclose additional demographic information or identify their employers.

(67,782 posts)5. That's true. There's a disclaimer toward the bottom of that article:
Campaigns are only required to report details, including addresses, of donations from people who have given more than $200. This analysis looks only at those large-dollar donors, including people who gave one-time donations of more than $200 as well as donors who have given multiple times to reach that threshold.
It is by nature an incomplete picture, because candidates rely on large-dollar donations to varying degrees; in addition, some donations cannot be matched to a state because the donor lives overseas. A more comprehensive picture will be available in January, when ActBlue, the Democratic online donation processor, releases information about small-dollar donations.

A more comprehensive picture will be available in January, when ActBlue, the Democratic online donation processor, releases information about small-dollar donations.
Even if ActBlue releases information about small-dollar donations, they don't maintain records on occupation and employer, and there are many small-dollar donations that go directly to the campaigns, not through ActBlue.
There is one candidate who has more than $42 million in such "small-dollar donations".

A group of current and former elected Democratic officials in Broward County said Tuesday theyd like to see their party nominate former Vice President Joe Biden for president in 2020.
Their second choice in a straw vote is Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Ind.
They definitely dont want either U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts or U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, the progressive candidates who are performing near the top of public opinion polls, along with Biden.....
But they believe the Democratic Partys overriding goal of defeating President Donald Trump can be best achieved by nominating a candidate like Biden or maybe Buttigieg who they believe can better to appeal to swing voters in a handful of states that will decide the election.
