Politico: The surprise voting bloc Bernie is banking on to win the nomination

The Vermont senator is aggressively courting a constituency with huge potential to sway elections but that typically doesn’t turn out in big numbers.

By LAURA BARRÓN-LÓPEZ and HOLLY OTTERBEIN 10/30/2019 05:02 AM EDT

DES MOINES, Iowa — Bernie Sanders has “barrio cred.”

That might sound like a crazy thing to say about the 78-year-old senator from one of the whitest states in the country. But Latino activists say they hear all the time from voters in their community who are high on Sanders, and that’s backed by polling showing him leading or tied among Latinos. Sanders won the highly coveted endorsement of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. His campaign co-chair is San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz. Afro-Latina rapper Cardi B is a fan.

Sanders’ star support from prominent Latinas “gives him barrio cred, street cred for this old white Jewish dude who is running for president,” said Domingo Garcia, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens. Garcia backed the Vermont senator in 2016 but, as president of LULAC, has refrained from endorsing a candidate in the current primary.

The fact that Joe Biden is counting on strong support from African Americans to win the Democratic nomination is widely known. Less understood is the similar bet that Sanders is making on Latino voters: His campaign believes that by driving up turnout among Latinos, as well as young and working-class voters of all ethnicities, he can build out the electorate, bring new voters into the fold, and expand the 15 to 20 percent of Democratic voters who zealously support the democratic socialist.

It's tough to objectively analyze "they hear all the time from voters in their community" and from that, make any measured conclusion.

But, as it's an editorial, "2+2=22 because I hear it all the time" is fair.

I really doubt that either Warren or sanders will break 15% statewide in Texas

The immigration issue coupled with the fact that Texas is still a conservative state. I imagine the democrat are moderated there.

I am supporting a number of candidates in districts targeted by the DCCC to flip from red to blue. If Warren or sanders is the nominee we can kiss those races goodbye

I think we can really gain a lot of ground nationwide with Biden. He has the most support among reliable voters.

Iowa Campaign Chief Misty Rebik claims Bernie has more voters commitments in the state than he had on Jan.1 2016 in his contest with Hillary ;which ended in a 50-50 tie ……. Of course voter turnout in a multi-candidate field will be much larger in Iowa than it was in 2016 …..……..If Bernie gets the same number of votes in Iowa in 2020 that he got in 2016 ,his percentage share of the total vote will be far less than the total share he received 4 years ago ….... A winning campaign is shooting for 30% of the Caucus Night vote ….… Bernie needs a massive turnout amongst College kids ……… And Yes , there are Latinos in Iowa … African -Americans too …… These groups of voters have never voted in large numbers on Caucus Night ……….Bernie hopes to change that equation 96 days from now ; and in doing so; greatly outperform the polls ……...
