Mayor Pete Buttigieg on Doing Away with Electoral College: 'Absolutely, it's Gotta Go'

by Tommy Christopher | Mar 20th, 2019, 10:40 am

-snip-

On Wednesday’s edition of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, the buzzed-about candidate sat for an extended interview that included a lightning round of sorts, during which Buttigieg expressed openness to adding Supreme Court Justices, expressed his support for a variation of Medicare for All that allows people to buy into the program, and weighed in on the electoral college in blunt fashion.

“Would you support getting rid of the electoral college?” co-host Willie Geist asked Buttigieg.

“Absolutely, it’s gotta go,” Buttigieg replied.

The electoral college became a hot topic this week when Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) came out strongly in favor of abolishing the institution at a CNN town hall, and other Democrats weighed in as well., including Beto O’Rourke.

On the other hand, Donald Trump seized on the opposite side of the argument, tweeting that “the Electoral College is far better for the U.S.A.”

That being said, I'd peg him as a fantastic VP selection. With the major mess that will be left by the trump* administration, I want someone with a WHOLE lot of legislative experience, serving as President. Serving as VP or in another high administrative post will give him just the right amount of experience and knowledge.

Joe Biden

In 2012, Donald Trump tweeted that the electoral college system was a 'disaster for a democracy.'

After losing the popular vote, President-elect Donald Trump has decided that the Electoral College is a pretty smart way to elect a president after all.
