A Michigan guide to the 2020 presidential candidates, so far

Like it or not, the next presidential election has begun.

More than a year from Michigan's 2020 presidential primary elections, it's anyone's guess as to who will emerge as the Democratic Party front-runner to challenge President Donald Trump.

A growing field of elected officials and public figures have thrown their hat into the ring, many of whom indicated Michigan will play a key role in choosing the country's president. Michigan helped elect Trump after supporting President Obama in 2008 and 2012, then elected Democratic candidates to statewide offices during the 2018 midterm elections.

U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY, and former Texas Congressman Beto O'Rourke both made stops in Oakland County on March 18. The Democrats both said candidates need to court Michigan voters more aggressively than in 2016.

Meanwhile, Trump is planning a March 28 campaign rally in Grand Rapids.

Here's a look at those who have launched campaigns, including GOP candidates and a third-party contender, and their connections to the Great Lakes state.
