Eric Boehlert: NYT handling Trump's smears of Biden the way they handled swift-boating of Kerry

In brief, they're helping the Republicans.

Boehlert was with Media Matters for a long time and has also written for Salon and Rolling Stone.

Twitter thread this morning starts here (full text below):

NYT has front page piece on how Biden isn’t handling Ukraine smear well....this is how NYT covered the Swift Boat lies, stressing how Dem was losing the GOP smear battle;
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/05/us/politics/biden-trump-ukraine.html

NYT points to this as proof that Biden is losing Ukraine smear battle: “...and cable news was flashing chyrons by the hour showing Mr. Trump’s wild claims.”

ponder that for a moment

if Trump relentlessly lies abt a Dem candidate and cable news repeats those lies hourly, NYT gives the win to Trump

Among the replies on Twitter:

I think Biden’s been doing a good job with it. @nytimes not so much.

And the never-ending email coverage. Imagine following Trump's conspiracy theory cues at this point. It's obviously deliberate framing by @nytimes.

Also the smearing of Gore IIRC

I just canceled my NYT subscription

NYT is trying to dismantle Biden just like they did Kerry. And Dukakis.

And Hillary.

This is a good message and is sufficient for me

Enough is enough. Every day — every few hours, seemingly — more evidence is uncovered revealing that President Trump is abusing the power of the presidency and is wholly unfit to be president. He is using the highest office in the land to advance his personal political interests instead of the national interest.

The president’s most recent violation of the rule of law — openly calling for China to interfere in our elections, as he stood on the South Lawn of the White House — is so outrageous, it’s clear he considers the presidency a free pass to do whatever he wants, with no accountability. ….

It is easy to be distracted by Trump’s daily outrages — to become obsessed with them or numb to them, or to normalize behavior that Americans would not have tolerated in any of the previous presidents in the nation’s history. Not me. While the House does its job on impeachment, I’m going to stay focused on what matters: remaking education so every child in the country is equipped to succeed in the 21st century; getting weapons of war off the streets and ending the epidemic of gun violence; building on Obamacare so that every American has access to quality, affordable health care; taking on the climate emergency imperiling the planet; and much more. I’m going to fight to ensure that the United States is once again the leader of the free world; a champion of democracy; and the bulwark of a stable, peaceful international order.

And to Trump and those who facilitate his abuses of power, and all the special interests funding his attacks against me: Please know that I’m not going anywhere. You won’t destroy me, and you won’t destroy my family. And come November 2020, I intend to beat you like a drum.

they can get away with. Unfortunately, our nation really doesn't have any single replacement for it as a national paper, especially including its usually excellent investigative journalism, so they're getting away with political murder. Of Democrats.

I'm perilously close to cancelling my subscription because of the ongoing framing that attacks not just Biden but continuously offers reports on Democratic members and policy filled with a 'whataboutism and bothsiderism' slant.

That's not objective reporting in any way, shape or form. We watched these rumors posing as journalism play out in 2016, the constant drumbeat over Hillary's emails, a giant nothingburger but poisonous enough to taint the election.

Enough already!

18. Biden campaign slams New York Times for op-ed by conservative author behind Ukraine claims
Thu Oct 10, 2019, 04:27 PM
Oct 2019

As President Trump has lobbed unsubstantiated and false claims of international corruption at former vice president Joe Biden and his son, he’s often turned to one source for ammunition: conservative author Peter Schweizer. So when the New York Times ran an op-ed on Wednesday written by Schweizer about Biden and his son Hunter, the Democratic presidential candidate’s campaign cried foul.

In a letter sent to New York Times executive editor Dean Baquet, Biden’s campaign called Schweizer a “discredited right-wing polemicist” and suggested the op-ed was part of a larger pattern of “journalistic malpractice.”

“Are you truly blind to what you got wrong in 2016, or are you deliberately continuing policies that distort reality for the sake of controversy and the clicks that accompany it?” Kate Bedingfield, Biden’s deputy campaign manager, wrote in the Wednesday letter, which was posted by CNN’s Oliver Darcy....

In his letter to the Times, Biden’s campaign complains that the piece makes “more malicious claims about the Biden family.”

“Despite voluminous work done by the independent press and fact-checkers — including some by The Times — to refute the heinous conspiracy theory that Donald Trump attempted to bully Ukraine into propping-up for him, the paper ran an op-ed by none other than Peter Schweizer, making more malicious claims about the Biden family,” Bedingfield wrote in the letter.
