Beto O'Rourke On Impeachment: 'This Has To Be About What Is Good For This Country'

Former Democratic Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke said he firmly supports the House impeachment inquiry of President Trump, calling it the "right course to pursue."

He also charged that Senate Republicans are complicit in allowing the president to engage in "willful lawbreaking."

"If we allow this president to commit crimes with impunity, then we will have set a precedent in America that some people are above the law," O'Rourke told NPR's Michel Martin as part of NPR's Off Script series of 2020 candidate interviews.

Martin pressed O'Rourke on whether going down the impeachment path is wise for the Democratic Party.

And, if some people are above the law, they are immune to what the Constitution outlines and dictates. Once that happens, the Constitution is then in serious jeopardy and so is the entire country as we know it.

When the Constitution is breached at the highest levels of government, we have ourselves a real, bloodless coup that could change everything drastically. Once you get to that point, as we see historically, it is not at all likely that you can get back again.

When you speculate on that, it underscores the dangerous territory we are in. I am not rabble rousing here, but we must avert this clear and present danger and not allow that to happen.

Edited to add: We see that Trump often accuses others of what he, himself is actually doing. He brought up a coup. I take it as projection.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
