Joe Biden took questions from black reporters for 90 minutes. He did not disappoint.https://www.politico.com/story/2019/08/27/biden-black-reporters-1476637
What about Kamala and Cory?
Biden said he doesnt know ... but he framed his lengthy record as both good news and bad news. People know me, or at least they think they know me, Biden said. I think after all this time, they think they have a sense of what my character is and who I am warts and all.
He said its tough to explain why black voters prefer him in such high numbers over his opponents but noted hes never felt uncomfortable being in a black community.
By the way, that doesnt mean itll stay that way, he added. You can go back and look: When Barack clobbered me in the campaign, you know, I more black support in South Carolina than anybody, including him. I got blown out in Iowa and all of a sudden everything changed. Same thing could happen.

In 2007, Democrats were way more united under the idea of supporting who they felt were closer to their issues as a candidate (71%) over supporting a candidate because they were the most electable (only 24%).
Compare that to recent polls that show electability a top issue and it's no wonder Biden continues to be the clear front-runner and lesser known, and established candidates, like Beto and Mayor Pete, or even Harris, struggle to establish any national support. In 2007, Democrats weren't driven by the electability issue - they're being defined by it in 2020. Even more so than in 2004 against Bush!
Could indicate why this race is so much more different than 2007 and why those polls everyone keeps pushing are meaningless.
Pretty great insight. Wow.

(68,643 posts)not the case with EW who is too far left for this constituency for the most part. Also, it is doubtful even if EW takes Iowa or New Hampshire that she can win a general...very little if any appeal in the rust belt states...we win by the electoral college...not direct vote...I am confident that EW can win the popular vote but not the electoral college regardless of Iowa...she has my support if I am wrong in the general, but I remain unconvinced she can win a primary much less a general.
