8/26 Morning Consult poll: Biden's 2nd choice for 30% Sanders voters, 22% Warren, 24% Harris, 20%

Buttigieg

https://morningconsult.com/2020-democratic-primary/

Check the Second Choices: Where Voters Could Migrate section, and click or hover over each card to see the three most popular 2nd choices for supporters of each of the top candidates.

He's the most popular pick as second choice with Sanders supporters, and even though he's listed as the 3rd choice for supporters of Warren, Harris and Buttigieg, with each of those candidates' supporters he's within only 1 or 2 points of the most popular second choice.

He's actually doing slightly better in that respect than he was in their polling two weeks ago:

Biden's still the 2nd choice for 30% of Sanders supporters. Warren follows at 26% (27% two weeks ago).

Two weeks ago, Warren supporters' 2nd choices were Sanders 23%, Harris 20%, and Biden 19%.

Today their 2nd choices are Sanders 24%, Biden 22%, and Harris 20%.

Two weeks ago, Harris supporters' 2nd choices were Warren 28%, Biden 23%, and Sanders 12%.

Today their 2nd choices are Warren 26%, Biden 24%, Sanders 12%.

Two weeks ago Buttigieg supporters' 2nd choices were Warren 22%, Biden 20%, and Harris 17%.

Today their 2nd choices are Warren 21%, Biden 20%, and Harris 15%.

So MC's polling is still indicating that if any one or two or three of the candidates in 2nd - 5th place drop out, Biden will pick up about as many of their supporters as any other leading candidate would (and more, if Sanders were to drop out).

Btw, I do NOT expect any of leading candidates to drop out any time soon.

But I think these polling numbers are important to post here, since some DUers seem to feel that if a candidate drops out, all or most of his or her followers would then support one particular rival. This polling indicates that ISN'T the case.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden

who will actually settle with who if one of the top four dropped out. There's no reason to believe polling like this at this point and time.

If one of the top four drops out, that pool of voters will start looking anew at each of the remaining candidates and remain persuadable to each of them to varying degrees.

more about Senator Sanders. If Warren fell away and many her supporters did go to Sanders, he and his "lock-her-up" "no Democrat/no way" faction could have enough of a presence at the convention to once again cause trouble, there and all through the GE. His noisy base may only be a minority of those who are checking his name, but they strongly affect the attitudes and behaviors of some of the others.

Maybe past time to go read what people who've known Sanders for years have to say about him.

Btw, something's encouraged Sanders to open up about his revolutionary dreams of seizing this and that means of production, and that's made me wonder about some details. When work is communally run by socialist cooperatives and everyone's guaranteed a job, what happens when coworkers turn out to be a Trump or Ann Coulter types? Or not-always-closet racists? Can troublemakers be fired if it's the only place in town for their skills? How would people who can't or won't do their job right but are guaranteed to have one be handled? Is everyone really paid the same for the same work no matter what, and how would socialist managers handle unhappy work environments, or would/could they?

(Not sure Sanders would have that last answer, remembering that he has not solved this problem in the one he maintains, even though he still has the power to rid himself of troublemakers there.)

Data shows that 12% of BernieBros turned around and voted for Trump. They aren't looking for solutions, they are looking to tear things up. So we can/should simply ignore that group.

As for the rest - yes, this is how we get Warren supporters. Sincere people who want bold, progressive change but realize that Bernie has ideas not plans. When Warren supports an idea, she can construct a plan to make it happen while still maintaining free markets (at least for the sectors that work best in a free market).

Where other polticians say we "can't" Warren says "I've analyzed the data and here's how we can."

As you say, sincere people who just haven't yet learned what they're incidentally part of but eventually will. The large #s who say Biden is their second choice (huh?! ) suggest it's a good many. Some may discover a home on the "revolutionary" left, most will move on, to Warren or another. But with their eyes open.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
Joe Biden
