Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI have a thought for Beto
I have to say, first, that I am truly not following the lower tier candidates. In fact, I am hardly following the leaders.
With Hickenlooper doing the right thing and dropping out to run for the Senate, Beto needs to do the same. In that vein, someone told me he was kinda whining about being asked to do that yet Castro was not.
Beto, take it as a compliment. You have strength and people are asking you to use it. Castro will be gone organically all on his own.
This go-round will not see a Jimmy Carter come from nowhere to the nomination. It will be one of the top five or six. And that leaves Beto out.
So please, Beto, run for Senate. The landscape this time, for you, is far better than when you barely lost to Cruz. Do the right thing. Run for the Texas Senate seat now held by good ol' boy "judge" Cornyn.

(9,696 posts)I do think he would be an excellent VP for the ticket. Actually wouldn't mind seeking him at the top of the ticket if it came to that.
No one is asking Castro to drop out and run for senate because Castro doesn't poll well in Texas like Beto does.

(4,763 posts)Cruz, one of the most unpopular Senators in Washington still held on to his seat despite an incredible challenge from Beto. If Beto takes on Cornyn and loses he will be politically finished having lost two high profile elections. I doubt very much that he will win the nomination for president but I like him in the mix. I love his new energy taking on Trump. His statement today about the country 'dying in its sleep' was very powerful. I can't find the exact quote.

How about we support the Democrat who's actually running for that seat?
Correction. There are several other candidates too. Read Reply 5 at the link: https://www.democraticunderground.com/1287241399#post12

(15,290 posts)and will not run for senate. He's running for president, period. Tbh, candidates generally don't seem to do as well the second time around. Probably a good decision on Beto's part.
Beto's interesting in that he has, imho, the most aspirational message of all the Dem candidates. His message gives a stark, black and white contrast with Trump.

WHY TAKE SUCH A BIG RISK?
Because when Beto goes for broke, everyone wins. Once upon a time, he was a longshot for Senate and taking on Republican incumbent Ted Cruz looked like a fool's errand. O'Rourke's energy didn't win him the election but it helped a lot of down-ballot Democrats win theirs. The GOP majority shrank in the Texas Senate and House and in the Texas delegation to the U.S. House.
His decision to run against Cruz meant not running for his safe U.S. House seat, and look what happened there. Veronica Escobar, D-El Paso, took his place and quickly developed a strong national profile as arguably the most capable, seasoned rookie in any contact sport since Dan Marino. Maybe that's bad for Republicans but it has been good for Texas and great for El Paso.
O'Rourke isn't the reason Texas is "in play," but he's one of them. And as bad as that may seem to you if you're a Republican, it's good for Texas. Why? Because it means that for the first time since 2004 if not earlier, both parties will pay attention to Texas. Candidates will campaign here. They and PACs will spend money advertising here.
The biggest reason it's good for Texas to be in play is that it motivates people on all sides to vote. Texas is a notoriously low-turnout state third-lowest in 2016. The parties, the candidates, the donors and the voters figure: Why bother if it's a slam-dunk for Republicans? That prophecy quit being self-fulfilling in 2018.
Higher turnout generally means better-engaged, better-informed, better citizens.
