Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumIs there a consensus candidate for people who don't want Biden or Sanders
And who are also extremely concerned about electability?
I'm asking because a number of people seem to have a problem with both candidates. If that's the case, then maybe some strategy should be involved to prevent splitting the vote in a way that would lead to an unfavorable outcome?
If you fall into the category of democratic primary voters who don't want Biden or Sanders, who would you be willing to coalesce around as a strong, electable alternative?
Full disclosure: I do not want Bernie to be the nominee. I like Biden, but I'm really worried about the relentless attacks that are coming at him from all corners. I'm 100% locked in with Elizabeth Warren.

Trump ran on a populist anti-trade message. To suggest, as I think you are doing, that if the TPP had passed, without Democratic opposition, the nominee would have been in a better position to oppose him is fanciful.

(7,277 posts)It is principally an R&D Investment and Training package. Those that do touch on trade are an increase in funding for the Import / Export Bank, and interventions in the currency market to counter exchange rate manipulation.
Her trade policies are set out here
https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/6223379-Elizabeth-Warren-s-Trade-Plan.html
The principal features are
Trade negotiators will publicly disclose negotiating drafts and provide the public with an opportunity to comment.
Trade advisory committees will prioritize the views of workers and consumers.
The US International Trade Commission will provide a regional analysis of the economic effects of a trade agreement.
The congressional approval process will offer more opportunities for the public and elected representatives to shape trade agreements.
And trade deals should be subject to these conditions
Recognizing and enforcing the core labor rights of the International Labour Organization, like collective bargaining and the elimination of child labor.
Upholding internationally recognized human rights, as reported in the State Departments Country Reports on Human Rights.
Be a party to the Paris Climate agreement and have a long-term, national and verified plan to reduce emissions.
Eliminate all domestic fossil fuel subsidies.
(All TPP countries were parties to the Paris Climate Agreement)
The TPP was infamous for pushing through fast track approval while keeping the provisions completely secret. When the final draft was revealed to entrench closed market Pharmaceutical pricing in the United States, there was nowhere to go.

(54,770 posts)designed to appeal to people who believe we can make it trading among ourselves -- the same people who voted for trump's promises. trumpsters call it "America First," Warren calls it "Economic Patriotism."
Her bashing of Obama's TPP and proposed agreements with European countries helped elect trump. That's clear. And, it was wrong.
The provisions weren't secret, everyone knew about them and they weren't a bit different from 2500 trade agreements negotiated since 1959. Plus, for Congressional approval the agreement was released and had to be reviewed for months before submitting to Congress.
She just didn't know enough about the agreements, including all that have gone before and were negotiated among European countries which America was not a party. But she saw the political benefit of bashing Obama to people who knew even less than her.
Poor, foreign countries and workers would have benefited from the agreements, maybe not to American standards but much better than 50 cents a day working in rice paddies, or harvesting agave plants. All this harms the foreign worker and will keep us at war -- economic and/or militarily -- for decades.
Sorry, she is/was wrong.
She also yielded to medical devise lobbyist in supporting repeal of the medical device tax which was a funding source for Obamacare. While small, it could have been expanded so that those who profit from healthcare, help pay for expanding it to everyone. Yet, Warren yielded and damaged the ACA.

(7,277 posts)In addition to increasing public awareness, Lance said releasing the text would make the ongoing negotiations more transparent and mainstream.
My constituents support free trade, and increasing good-paying jobs and economic growth in New Jersey, Lance wrote. They, however, want trade agreements that are transparent and good for American workers and American taxpayers. Yet the TPP negotiating text is currently classified, and only members of Congress and staffers with security clearance can access it. I believe declassifying and releasing the negotiating text online will bring much-needed transparency, accountability and public awareness to the Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement and its policy implications.
The TPP terminology and all negotiating notes have been made classified by the Obama administration. Members of Congress can read the draft agreement under heavy restrictions, but cannot release any of the information, or publicly discuss or consult on what they have read. Lance is one of the few Congressional members who has actually read the TPP text.

Hillary Clinton comes out against Obamas Pacific trade deal
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2015/10/07/hillary-clinton-comes-out-against-obamas-pacific-trade-deal/
"As of today, I am not in favor of what I have learned about it," Clinton said in the interview. .. "I've been trying to learn as much as I can about the agreement, but I'm worried."
Again, the insane secrecy surrounding the TPP did no one any favors. There were sound reasons to oppose the Investor State Dispute Settlement mechanism - a lack of judicial review for starters, as the free trade Cato Institute agrees -

(54,770 posts)Id likely go with Harris or Klobuchar. Biden for one term is also a possibility, although I really prefer a woman. If hes still a big odds favorite to beat trump when my primary comes in March, it will be hard to vote against him.
I like a lot of what Warren says, but shes just wrong about Economic Patriotism, and shes promising too much that can be funded from her wealth tax and repeal of recent tax cuts. Im not opposed to any of the things shes proposing, but she should be honest and lay out to people what each proposal will cost and just say, These are wonderful things that will benefit all of you, and the rich will pay for a big chunk, but your taxes will likely go up a bit too.
BTW: Ill enthusiastically support Warren or any other Democrat that is nominated.

(49,034 posts)there were such a consensus candidate, they'd already be polling better than Biden and Sanders. You'd need a very strong candidate who hasn't declared yet to become more of a consensus candidate than the front-runner.
I don't think we'll even see a consensus candidate for the left wing of the party, because everything I've seen suggests that neither Warren nor Sanders will drop out in favor of the other, as much as some of their supporters online fantasize about that possibility.

(11,991 posts)...once you factor out Biden and Sanders themselves, the preferred "next best choice" for Biden voters, Sanders voters, Warren voters, and Buttigieg voters, are all Warren. So maybe that kind of answers you question about the closest thing to a consensus candidate at the moment. Bu Iowa is still a long way away.
I'm not sure what I think about best electability. Realistically, someone telegenic/charismatic is a bg factor. And I think being a veteran could be a real plus against Donnie Bonespurs. So that leaves maybe Buttigieg and Gabbard?
I really admire Warren's passion. I also worry about the whole "Pocahontas" thing.

(7,277 posts)Senator Harris could be a consensus candidate. Three reservations
1. Other than 'prosecuting the case' she is bland
2. She has proposed a flakey Medicare for All (which satisfies no one)
3. As nominee, Harris would feed into The Con's 'Keep America White' strategy.

(41,832 posts)Throwing out Biden who would IMO be best for the EC, then we have:
Harris- Pros are female, not seen as too far left, could really bring out AAs and East Asians. Cons: California does not bring any EC advantage.
Beto- Pros - young and good looking, TEXAS and possibly Arizona and Florida would be in play. Cons - seen as lacking experience, hyper speaking style
With these two and the right VP pick, they could probably beat Trump. This could also be said about Biden however.
