The Issue California has is that a person can be registered as no party preference, and request a Democratic ballot, thus really not aligned with the Democratic Party but still have a voice in choosing the Democratic nominee in California, which in my view is extremely foolhardy
Those that push for the open or semi-open primary are mostly those from the left, and while those that subscribe to such think it will benefit third party endeavors
In the Lipinski election in Illinois was an example of how the extremely right wing Democrat won over the progressive Democrat in their open primary because of Republican cross over votes, and demonstrates the double edged the Democratic Party face with open and semi-open primary states
