Democratic primary polls: Who is ahead in the 2020 race?

POLITICO's polling partner, Morning Consult, surveys more than 5,000 registered voters across the United States every day. This poll represents one week's worth of responses from voters who intend to vote in the Democratic primary.

For each poll, Morning Consult asks those voters to tell us their first and second choice among the field of candidates vying to be the Democratic nominee for president. Morning Consult also asks how they feel about each candidate: whether they have a favorable or unfavorable opinion, or whether they're unfamiliar with a candidate.

It is interesting that Sanders and Warren run so far behind Joe, the moderate. This may change, but emmaverybo Jul 2019 #4

1. They give you a snapshot. The further you are away from an election, the less relevant and important that snapshot is. So, right now, given we are months away from the first primary, this utility is low. But, it rises as we get closer.

2. They can tell you trends. This is the more important use of polling at this point in a race. Who is steadily rising? Who is stagnant? Who is steadily falling. The trend is useful at this stage.

So, does this tell me much about the primary voting? Not really no. Do polls against Donald Trump tell me much? Other than who might be viable, no, not really.

Do trends tell us something? Yes they do. We've pretty well established the top four candidates who have a shot at winning this thing barring some major surprise. Who will ultimately win we don't know yet.

what won’t is that the party as a whole is not embracing the progressive agenda.
