(9,535 posts)Especially if any of the other top 3 flame out due to gaffes, background stuff coming out etc., he could still be viable.
I think there are stronger candidates this time but that's only my opinion, and it is still very early in the race. Bernie was vetted in the last election, so only likely to drop if others become better known and rise in popularity with voters.

(94,602 posts)It's the trend line. Sanders has all the name recognition from his last campaign but he started the 2020 Primary with half the share of votes he got last time, and his position has been dropping. Absent a fatal attack on Warren, I don't see how he carves out a win.

(49,005 posts)Trump. The latest Michigan poll, for instance
https://www.democraticunderground.com/1287215073
has Biden beating Trump by 13 points, and Sanders fairly close behind, beating Trump by 11 points. Warren is several points behind, beating Trump by 6 points. Harris and Booker and Buttigieg all beat Trump in that poll, too, but by narrow margins, within the poll's margin of error.

(94,602 posts)The latest Quinnipiac poll has Sanders now in FOURTH place, despite his supposed electability.

(11,990 posts)...which means that those voters who are selecting ONLY on the basis of beating Trump are breaking more for Biden (with Sanders doing as well as he is probably for a variety of other reasons). This means that IF anything happens to Biden where his candidacy takes a hit and people look to alternatives, Sanders if "first in line" to inherit a good chunk of that portion who say "I'll vote for whoever has the best chance of beating Trump."
Which means, yeah, I expect him to stick around a good while. He's well financed, too, so he CAN stick around.
I'll tell you whose window is closing... every candidate who fails to qualify for the third debate. Gonzo.

(9,535 posts)Many Californians voted for Sanders last time and may shift back to him now (and some to Warren). California has more electoral votes than any other state, so it's a huge factor with an earlier primary this time around. California could well be the kingmaker--or queenmaker.

(6,229 posts)strong candidate that can win the Electoral College and beat trump. This election will be won in the middle. Sanders would not win. Folks want normalcy. Biden running with a strong progressive Dem woman would be a great ticket.

(14,578 posts)He is not a particularly good manager, and to my mind, while he's always been on the right side of history in major economic issues, he's not gotten a lot of stuff done.
Same with Biden.
My question to both of these gentlemen is this: You have both been in Congress for many years, decades, and in Biden's case been VP. If you are so effective, why are things so much worse now than when you first got into office?
Is that a painful question? Yes, I know it is very stinging. But it is also very legitimate. I'm tired of people talking a good game and then not getting anything done. I'm not thrilled about the record of either Bernie or Biden, though I do like Bernie's policy positions much better.
But in 2020, the Dems need to run someone who can get millennials and gen Z to the polls, and this time around I don't think it is either Bernie or Joe. Both good men, and I will certainly support if either is the nominee, but we have other candidates that can do better, I think. Better against Trump, and better when they get in office.

(43,049 posts)that other guy. But Bernie was the real deal, and justified all that hope that Nader and Kucinich brewed.
Well, that was then. These days, he hasn't changed much, but the public has, as has the country. This isn't a game any more-- it's not just between two white guys 10 degrees off center from each other.
We have already seen that a woman can win-- by 3 million votes. And that was before we knew how big an asshole Trump would be, so that shouldn't even be a question. We've got a bunch of damn good women running, so I can see the nation asking why not give one of them a shot.
Biden is a known quantity. Beyond any faults he may have, he is pretty much guaranteed to do his best to bring us back to stability and respect around the world. It's natural for him to be in the lead.
Bernie is also a known quantity, and while the rest of the mob would involve a bit of faith that they could do the job, we know what kind of a job he would do, and it's not looking all that good. He's got that storage of piss and vinegar from all those years of sniping from the sidelines, but he's slowly but surely trending downwards as people find other, more substantial, choices. Bernie has simply not kept up with the times.
