Gillibrand Preparing Attack on Biden

They don’t want to talk about it, but the struggling Kirsten Gillibrand campaign appears to have spent a lot of time Googling Joe Biden as of late. The New York senator has publicly —and cryptically — alluded to unnamed Democratic candidates who ‘do not believe necessarily that it’s a good idea that women work outside the home.’

4. Here's Biden's comments on that matter.
Sun Jul 28, 2019, 11:55 PM
Jul 2019

From 1981:

I think it is a sad commentary on this society when we say, as a matter of social policy, that we should make it easier for people who have neither the financial necessity nor the personal need to forget their responsibility to take care of a child all day from the time the child is an infant until the time he or she gets in school. I do not care whether in a modern marriage you want the man or the woman to take that responsibility. That has to be resolved by each couple individually. ...

So what we are doing now as a social policy, is saying, “Here, drop them off at 8 o’clock in the morning and pick them up at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, because I want a new patio; because I want to go on vacation; because I want to expand my horizon.” As a social policy I think it is undesirable and wrong.

Biden did not oppose the child tax credit - he supported it for couples making less than $30,000 (about $88,000 in today’s terms). The amendment he voted against benefited people earning more than $30,000.

Biden offered his own amendment to eliminate the credit for couples making a combined income of more than $30,000. Single parents would have had no cap.

Biden said this:

In his floor remarks on July 28 of that year, Biden framed his argument in personal terms. He noted that his own Senate salary was $60,000, and his current wife, Jill Biden, made $15,000 as a teacher.

“It is outrageous to make my father, who makes less than $20,000 a year, to pay a tax to see to it that I can put my child in a day care center. I think that is preposterous,” he said, using his father as a stand-in for the U.S. taxpayer. “If my wife and I want to do that, no one should be able to stop us. ... But my father should not pay for that.”

Here's a whole article on it where I took these quotes:

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/joe-biden-child-care-tax-credit_n_5d39fc3be4b004b6adbcee1f

So, it looks like Gillibrand is revving up for a disingenuous attack.

She is a professor at a community college. She worked the entire time Biden was VP. So I don’t get it if Gillibrand is talking about Joe Biden.

The candidates shouldn't be attacking each other. I didn't like it when Harris didn't last time and don't like this either.

The intrigue: [...] an account on the site newspapers.com that appears to be linked to her campaign has been gathering news articles about the former vice president's stance on the child tax credit in the '80s. (The newspaper.com account and related Twitter account appear to have been taken down after we approached the Gillibrand campaign for comment.)

--- The account belongs to somebody called wilcox8405. Gillibrand employs a researcher named Alexandra Wilcox.

--- This newspaper clipping service shows which articles its users save. By default, clippings users save are made public unless they change their settings to render them private.

--- The wilcox8405 account — which doesn't show the user’s full name — appears to be the Gillibrand staffer because the account has a Gillibrand article clipped and also articles from 1981 about Biden's vote against expanding the child tax credit.

---Wilcox8405 clipped these Biden articles on July 11 and 12, indicating that Gillibrand's team has been preparing this attack on Biden for more than 2 weeks.

When we asked Gillibrand's campaign about all of this, spokesperson Meredith Kelly said: "Kirsten believes we need to have a broader and more intentional conversation about valuing women in this country and even this primary, and she intends to do so in the coming days. Stay tuned."
