Bernie Sanders: 'It's unbelievable' Trump 'attacks American cities'

Sen. Bernie Sanders said Sunday it is "unbelievable" President Donald Trump attacks Americans and US cities after Trump tweeted Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings' Baltimore district is a "disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess."

"It's unbelievable that we have a President of the United States who attacks American cities, who attacks Americans," the Vermont senator told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union," hosted from Detroit, Michigan.

Sanders called Cummings "one of the most decent and outstanding members of the House of Representatives."

"Our job is to bring people together, to improve life for all people, not to be, have a racist President who attacks people because they are African Americans. That is a disgrace and that is why we're going to defeat this President," the 2020 Democratic candidate told Tapper.

America is the wealthiest country in the history of the world, but anyone who took the walk we took today around this neighbourhood would not think you were in a wealthy nation, you would think you were in a third world country,” added Sanders. “Where unemployment is over 50%, and with a community that does not even have decent quality grocery stores where moms can buy quality food for their kids. A community in which the dream of getting a higher education is as real as going to the moon.”

A few blocks away from where we live [in Vermont] there is a very nice grocery store, where we buy good quality food at a reasonable price. You don’t have that,” he told the group of church leaders. “The prices that people in this community pay are substantially higher than what I pay and the quality of the food that I get is significantly better.”
