Bernie Sanders Says Biden 'Is Sounding Like Donald Trump' on Medicare for All

By Tommy Christopher Jul 18th, 2019, 1:30 pm

Independent Vermont Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders compared rival Joe Biden with President Donald Trump, saying that the former vice president “sounds like Donald Trump” on the issue of Sanders’ “Medicare for All” plan.

On Thursday, The New York Times published an article in which Sanders takes a hard shot at Biden over the rollout of his health care plan, which Sanders says distorts his own Medicare for All plan.

“I am disappointed, I have to say, in Joe, who is a friend of mine, really distorting what Medicare for All is about,” Sanders told the NYT Wednesday, adding, “And unfortunately, he is sounding like Donald Trump. He is sounding like the health care industry in that regard.”

Biden name-checked M4A in his health care rollout video, in which he says he “understand(s) the appeal” of the bill, but says “it means getting rid of Obamacare, and I’m not for that.”

And at an Iowa AARP forum on Monday, Biden told the crowd, “I think the transition from having roughly 60 million people … on Medicare now, to add another roughly 300 million people in one fell swoop, … Medicare goes away as you know it,” adding “All the Medicare you have is gone, it’s a new Medicare system.”

Dem candidate's policy.

If Medicare for All passed, everyone would be covered, if it doesn't; that takes nothing away from existing Medicare and its' coverage.

No American under Medicare is in danger from losing their coverage because of Medicare for All, indeed it would be strengthened and improved, Biden was just trying to mislead and scare the older folks.

(snip)

On Tuesday, former Hillary Clinton senior adviser and current CNN analyst Jess McIntosh made an observation that was nearly identical to Sanders’ attack on Biden.

McIntosh told the hosts of New Day that Biden was coming “dangerously close to using Republican talking points when talking about Medicare for All.”

“There was a lot of ‘Medicare as you know it will go away, seniors will be left with nothing,’ that sounds suspiciously like Donald Trump,” she said, and added “As long as Biden is trying to appeal to the Democratic base during the primary, they are not going to like him engaging with this topic using that kind of language.”

As Sanders himself has pointed out, Medicare for All would replace the current program with more comprehensive benefits, but as Biden and even supporters of the plan like Senator Kamala Harris have pointed out, would entail a significant transition.

When a Democratic Candidate shares this concept as shared by Bernie for Democrats, regarding such repuplican talking points...I tend to be more attentive to the message. I'm focused on our Demicratic Candidates.

He should get on board and explain the ways it could be done that would, in fact, lower costs and increase medical care for the most people. He should explain why it's not okay to have profits go to unnecessary middle-persons---the insurance companies.

Just take care of all our people---as they do in other industrialized countries.

Biden's attacks on Medicare for all do echo the insurance industry claims.

Biden claims that 300 million people would be added in an instant, the current bill has a four year roll out. That is not an instant.

Biden claims you will lose your doctor. That's the same claim made against the ACA.

Progressives Support Shoring Up ACA Before Tackling Medicare For All

Despite a large division in the Democratic party over the best health care solution ― single-payer or a continuation and possible expansion of something like Obamacare ― progressives in Congress appear to be in lockstep with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s priority of shoring up the ACA before tackling anything like Medicare for All.

“I’m happy to support any provision that strengthens the ACA and plug some of the gaps that we’re seeing, particularly as it’s under assault by the president,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) told HuffPost on Wednesday. “I think it’s part of a longer-term vision, at least for me, towards guaranteeing ― truly guaranteeing ― health care for all Americans.”

Though I agree with Biden that I would not want to eliminate ObamaCare. I do not see a way we could pass Medicare For All in the current political climate. Democrats will need to retain the House and take the Senate in 2020 which does not seem likely.

These policies that he and the other candidates have? Pie.. just Pie to eat on. I never cast my vote in the primary for POTUS based on policy. I cast my votes for Senators and my congressperson based on policies. Congress writes the laws (sets the policy).

For POTUS: Best chance to win? Will Veto harmful Republican led legislation? Will sign off on Democratic Party led legislation?

BS isn't the best chance to win.. at all.
I don't doubt for a second he'd Veto harmful Republican led legislation.
I really question if he would pass Democratic Party led legislation, and this is my biggest problem with him. Odds are, anything passed by our Democratic Party members in Congress, unless we happen to gain a super majority in the Senate (not happening 2020), and maintain our hold in the House is going to almost definitely have something compromising in it. We don't need president purity tester in office. If it moves us forward, we need a president that will sign off on it.. even if parts of it requires nose holding.. BS ain't that guy.

He's the ONLY candidate running that I have absolutely NO confidence in supporting our party's legislation that does make it through the hurdles.

Take just this issue: Even though he's not fully behind it, if we elect a congress that does pass a bill that provides Medicare for all, does ANYONE, for a second think that a President Joe Biden would not sign on it? Does ANYONE really think he'd break out the Veto pen??? Preposterous. However, I likewise don't doubt for a second that BS WOULD veto a hard fought for bill that provides for what Joe is proposing just because it isn't pure enough for his tastes.

...on Medicare too...

...with all the deductibles, co-pays and limited benefits we have, it's the polls way of shrinking the program...we can thank everyone in Washington for that...

...I've worked blue-collar most of my life with only a couple of good Union shops in the mix...to me, Medicare is still a better deal than what I had in most of those scab shops...

...my only concern about Medicare For All is that somehow they'll further degrade our current Medicare...

...you know, we should be demanding improvements to Medicare like the elimination of deductibles and co-pays, inclusion of vision care, dental, hearing aids, drugs, etc.

...we need to stop getting distracted and voters need to be convinced...

...when do we get our turn at bat?...

I doubt that many if any Biden supporters will flip to sanders in the real world for a host of reasons. This false claim will likely hurt sanders with these voters. As a Biden supporter, I found this attack to be both false and to further reinforce my support for Biden

This is deja vu all over again. Except this ain't 2016 and Sanders is frustrated with the field of many choices where the game has changed and old schtick isn't working. Telling Dems that we're no different than Republicans is one sour note after another.

The Senator from Vermont needs to take his grumpy old man act back to his native state. Leave the 2020 contest to actual Democrats dedicated to erasing Donald Trump and his hatred out of the equation, repairing the damage done and getting on with the job of recovery.

The false equivalencies aren't working, Bernie.

117. A former Hillary Clinton senior advisor echoed Bernie's words on CNN on Tuesday.
Fri Jul 19, 2019, 12:02 AM
Jul 2019
On Tuesday, former Hillary Clinton senior adviser and current CNN analyst Jess McIntosh made an observation that was nearly identical to Sanders’ attack on Biden.

McIntosh told the hosts of New Day that Biden was coming “dangerously close to using Republican talking points when talking about Medicare for All.”

“There was a lot of ‘Medicare as you know it will go away, seniors will be left with nothing,’ that sounds suspiciously like Donald Trump,” she said.

123. Biden is correct, though - Bernie's plan isn't the current Medicare system.
Fri Jul 19, 2019, 12:43 AM
Jul 2019

It completely revamps it.

Biden never said, "Medicare as you know it will go away, seniors will be left with nothing..." this is something Bernie's camp has spun.

Biden never said seniors would be left with nothing. He mentioned a hiatus, but later clarified:

What Biden was saying, Bates said, was that Sanders' plan for a sweeping overhaul of the health care system would take much longer than Biden's own plan to be approved by Congress -- so, under Sanders, there would be a hiatus between the status quo and the possible future arrival of an improved system.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/18/politics/biden-sanders-medicare-for-all-fact-check/index.html

So, even this person is now being disingenuous by suggesting Biden claimed 'seniors would be left with nothing'.
