Related: About this forumTurning 80 years old as President
When will a candidate turn 80 during their term if elected President in 2020 ?Sanders: 8 months into his first term
Biden: 1 year and 10 months into his first term
Warren: never
Harris: never
Buttigieg: never
O'Rourke: never
But age is just a number. Is it an important number?
We never had an 80 year old serving as President, is it time to change that?

This country needs long-term stability to repair the damage caused by Trump.
Now if Biden or Sanders managed to win the nomination and I will vote for them of course. And then I will hope and pray that they stay healthy. Sickness and death can happen to anyone but you know... my uncle was 78 and he was given a full bill of health by his doctors. 10 months later he had a stroke and that was it.

You are supporting Elizabeth Warren, six to seven years the junior of Biden and Sanders respectively. Yet you're making a point about the candidates' age and/or posing the question about an eighty-year old threshold.
The point/argument/whatever doesn't wash considering the age of your own candidate preference. Hello?
I wouldn't discount Elizabeth Warren for her age, anymore than Biden or Sanders. Their age is relative to their own individual health, stamina and intellectual capacity. And right now none of the three have demonstrated any problems. Could that change? Of course it could. But neither you nor I have access to a crystal ball. Btw, health problems can also befall our younger candidates.
I'd also add this has a distinct deja vu smell to it. Hillary Clinton was pilloried for nonexistent health 'concerns.' And now we have a mental case squatting in the White House.

For that reason, I think we had an absurd field of candidates in 2016 and now. I would rather vote for a younger candidate, but thus far Elizabeth Warren is making the argument that most appeals to me.

(13,390 posts)It is a fact that our bodies and minds deteriorate with age. The chance of developing various impairments is 100 percent. The variety of types of impairments increases with age. Not all impairments are disabling but many make daily life activities difficult. There's a good reason why people retire, take on fewer responsibilities and plan their funerals in later years. They have the consideration to avoid conditions where their sudden absence or limits on their abilities creates a burden.
Age is far from arbitrary. There is a good reason why 10 yes olds are not driving cars or walking around with credit cards.

(109,009 posts)This study looked at the brains and cognitive functioning of people age 80 and older.
https://www.webmd.com/alzheimers/news/20110810/study-alzheimers-harder-to-spot-over-80#2
In the older participants, there was less difference in memory and other measures of cognitive function between people with a diagnosis of Alzheimers and people in the same age group without a diagnosis than in the younger age group.
The older Alzheimers patients also showed less severe thinning of portions of the cerebral cortex and the overall cerebrum than the younger patients when compared to healthy peers.
Bondi says this is not surprising because decreases in the thickness of these areas of the brain have been found to occur with normal aging.
The study appears online today in the journal Neurology.

(8,144 posts)The Potential of the Aging Mind
Combating commonly held beliefs about the aging brain
A persistent myth in our youth-focused culture suggests the process of aging means inevitable, progressive decline. In my field of research, brain health, this myth results in most people believing and allowing their best brain years to be in the past.
Think about it. When do you believe your brain was operating at peak performance?
I frequently ask people this question, and the answer is almost always 10 to 20 years ago - no matter what age they are!
While it is true that many brain processes decline as we age, that is only part of the story. As brain health experts, we are discovering there is more to be celebrated than to be feared. Some brain functions actually improve as we grow older. In fact, as long as no disease is present, the majority of seniors continue to have the capacity to continue to learn new things and make sound decisions.

(8,144 posts)the mind has a reservoir of knowledge and experience to draw upon, so that slower processing is well compensated for by sounder decision making. This we traditionally have called wisdom.
It has also been shown that older people tend to scan a problem, looking at the big picture rather than getting bogged down details as do their younger counterparts.
Intellectually, aging people can not only retain knowledge, but continue to grow.
This fact is well attested to by the numbers of artists and writers who have produced some of their
best work past 65. Diana Athil, a British writer, won the prestigious Costa award at 90.
Having read Bidens recent writing on the geo-political situation in Central America and our history of failed policies there, which contributes to migrants fleeing their countries, Id say he is in fine
shape cognitively.
My personal experience with seniors in my community, where people are highly educated, and continue to learn, teach, travel shows me that barring brain disease, aging minds can function
at a high capacity.

(6,046 posts)The presidency of Nelson Mandela began on 10 May 1994, when Nelson Mandela, an anti-apartheid activist, lawyer, and former political prisoner, was inaugurated as President of South Africa, and ended on 14 June 1999. He was the first non-white head of state in South African history, as well as the first to take office following the dismantling of the apartheid system and the introduction of multiracial democracy. Mandela was also the oldest head of state in South Africa's history, taking office at the age of seventy-five.[1]
The presidency is a 5 year term in South Africa and Mandela intended to serve one term. He was for many reasons the right person at the right time.

(52,169 posts)when we look at that statement we see bigotry well guess what your OP is bigotry as well. Neither Sanders nor Biden are my first choice but their age isn't my issue with either one. I think it is perfectly reasonable to have a discussion as to whether these particular candidates who will turn 80 in office are good or bad candidates. And part of that discussion would of necessity be health and age. Just like the young age of Buttigieg and O'Rourke would be subjects of discussion. Both Biden and Sanders seem to be healthy men who are up to the challenge of both campaigning and governing. Similarly both Buttigieg and O'Rourke seem to be prepared to govern.
