Sanders, AOC Push for 'Climate Emergency' Declaration in Congress

Over two dozen lawmakers, including most of the senators currently running for president, signed on as co-sponsors.

The resolution, introduced by Sanders (I-Vt.), Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), calls for "a national, social, industrial, and economic mobilization of the resources and labor of the United States at a massive-scale to halt, reverse, mitigate, and prepare for the consequences of the climate emergency and to restore the climate for future generations." The sponsors described a need for a mobilization of the nation's resources and labor on par with when the country entered World War II.

(snip)

The resolution comes just a day after an extreme storm flooded parts of Washington, D.C., with nearly a month's worth of rain in an hour, and it follows record heat waves that sent Europe's temperatures soaring to 114 degrees Fahrenheit.

(snip)

Last month was the hottest June on record globally, and one study has already linked Europe's heat wave to climate change. Other recent studies linked global warming to an increase in insect-borne disease in the Northeast and to dangerous algae growth in the nation's waters.

I'm sure. I mean it's not like you constantly ridicule the Green New Deal or anything.

...of which Rep. Blumenauer is a big advocate btw.*

---

Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03), member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, today announced that he is an orginal co-sponsored Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’ Green New Deal resolution. The resolution, which outlines the scope and scale of the Green New Deal, included provisions from Blumenauer.

“Our climate is in a crisis, and we need big ideas and massive energy to create the movement that will address it, said Congressman Earl Blumenauer. “We must invest in clean energy jobs, green infrastructure, and sustainable agriculture in a way that is equitable and just. I am excited about this bold vision being driven by Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez and am proud to back this resolution as our first step towards enacting the Green New Deal.”

with some, in favor of divisive spatting and point scoring. Never mind the significant issues we’re facing as a group. Like our rapidly devolving climate, just for instance. I say by whatever means necessary, whoever can do something, should. It’s imperative to get the public’s attention on this so there will be pressure to find solutions and speed the changes we need to make.

The resolution, drafted by Blumenauer and co-sponsored by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), is intended to focus attention on the quickening pace of climate change and spur action on a national and global scale.

snip======================================

Blumenauer was inspired to draft the resolution after President Donald Trump declared a national emergency on the Southern border to secure funds to build a border wall.

snip======================================

Blumenauer planned to introduce the resolution on the floor of the house by Tuesday afternoon.
