Kamala Harris proposes $100B in homeownership assistance

NEW ORLEANS — Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris is proposing $100 billion in federal grants to pay for down payment and closing costs to help close what she says is a racial wealth gap and address historical discrimination in homeownership against black families.

Harris announced her plan Saturday at the Essence Festival in New Orleans, where the California senator was among several of the 2020 White House candidates attending the largest annual gathering of black women in the country.

"By taking these challenges on, we can close that gap," Harris said. "That not only lifts up black America, that lifts up all of America."

Harris said the plan would help at least 4 million families living in areas that were redlined, a segregation-era practice that limited black borrowers' ability to buy homes and set boundaries on where they can live, affecting the wealth of those families for generations.

She should've said 'lower income' or 'struggling' people, and should not have made the announcement at a gathering of this nature.

Putting forth the idea of a $100B 'handout' to African Americans (or that's how her enemies will frame it), specifically?

TERRIBLE move, IMHO.

Not that I hate 'the idea', I actually don't, I'd support it ... it's just that it's going to be received very poorly ... this is more something you maybe try to do once you've 'won'.

2. Don't play race Kamala

First she brings up busing. Now this? Maybe a couple others I missed.
It's clear to me she's trying to cut into Biden's AA support, which is OK. But doing it by bringing up these obvious racial issues only hurts us in the general election. If there's one thing trump can do well it's exploiting these kind of foolish proposals to divide the country. The election should be referendum on trump, not far left liberal agendas.
I even support many of these ideas, but playing them in a general election is not a winning hand.

You do know there are people who don’t want to buy a home and want to rent, right? So even more classes of people. Do renters get any assistance?

Making big monetary promises to certain groups will divide the nation further. Let's spend that money on education, healthcare, rebuilding the infrastructure and dealing with climate change first. The housing improvements will take care of themselves if people are educated, healthy and working! If she keeps this up , we will lose! tRumpets hate her sex, her race and their idea of socialism. We have to win!!!!

A program for all people in need is more inclusive.

She is putting herself at risk to become a single issue (race) candidate. Pandering specifically to 25% of the Democratic base can only take her so far in the primary.

Repair is the root word and it's about fixing things. I'm fine with a program that helps everyone who needs it based on economic situation but I know from experience as a low income white single Mom that I faced plenty of discrimination too. If it's based solely on race then I will not be able to support Harris.

This will leave a mark.

Newsflash...lack of homeownership isn't a race issue. I have two college degrees, valedictorian, am white, over 50 and I don't own a home either. I've been homeless more than once too. I'm all for boosting people up but not at the expense of others.

for years are losing their investment and their homes. Foreclosure has ousted many in what have been predominantly black neighborhoods, Latino neighborhoods, or mixed. Foreclosure is also
putting elderly out of their homes.

I do think we have to look at ways to address housing issues. I am not sure Harris’s proposal should be the first or the best way to go.

As a prosecutor she should already know that her plan will never pass a court ruling it unconstitutional because it discriminates against other minorities and whites. It's actually pretty insulting to African-Americans for her to think that they're too stupid to recognize that fact.
