Trump predicts 2020 Dems will be 'somewhat easier' debate foes
By QUINT FORGEY 07/02/2019 08:36 AM EDT
President Donald Trump insisted Tuesday that he defeated Hillary Clinton in all three of their televised debates during the 2016 campaign, suggesting that the Democratic contenders vying to challenge him in 2020 would pose less of a threat than Clinton did.
As most people are aware, according to the Polls, I won EVERY debate, including the three with Crooked Hillary Clinton, despite the fact that in the first debate, they modulated the sound on me, and got caught, Trump wrote on Twitter.
This crew looks somewhat easier than Crooked, but you never know? the president added, referring to the two dozen Democrats vying for their partys 2020 presidential nomination.
Trump and Clintons first general election debate, moderated by Lester Holt of NBC News, took place in September 2016 at Hofstra University in New York. The inaugural face-off between the two candidates garnered a viewership of 84 million people, and holds the record as the most-watched debate in American history.
After complaining to reporters in the post-debate spin room and during an interview with Fox News that his microphone during the broadcast was defective, the non-partisan Commission on Presidential Debates acknowledged that there were issues regarding Donald Trumps audio that affected the sound level in the debate hall.
Trumps post Tuesday regarding his debate performance come as pundits and various political commentators assess how the incumbent president will fare against the 2020 Democratic candidates, who sparred on stage for the first time last week in Miami. Those broadcasts saw strong performances by California Sen. Kamala Harris and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who enjoyed subsequent boosts in their polling numbers.

OP
Trump has the benefit of incumbency this time. But we have other advantages this time, too.

(10,233 posts)1. Given Trump's rapidly deteriorating mental faculties and physical stamina,
he would have a difficult time winning a debate with a 13-year-old. After another 15 months of cognitive decline, Trump will be lucky if he can even tell another lie.

(11,990 posts)2. Trump has the benefit of incumbency this time. But we have other advantages this time, too.
We have candidates who have more general appeal than HRC had, who dont have her underwater favorable/unfavorables (among the general voting population), who won't be the target of a damaging FBI statement in the final weeks of the campaign, who will probably pick a more inspiring VP who might actually help win some states, and who presumably will spend more time in states like Wisconsin...
