(31,261 posts)killed his chances. He was beginning to make inroads into the Black vote. But the police force becoming less diverse under his watch is not a good look, the killing highlighted some of the issues like police force diversity and deescalation training, as well as racial and cultural sensisitivy training and followup by the police chief and mayor to insure that training was being followed.

I saw that happen. The business places ads in various places, interviews minorities to the extent they get responses, but even if some are hired who meet the qualifications and pass tests if any, there wouldn't be enough. You can't hire people who don't want to do the job or for the pay, or maybe not that many minorities in the area of the business. All you can do is run the ads, actively recruit, interview, and offer jobs. I would imagine that not many AAs want to work for the police department these days. It's a dangerous job, and the pay isn't great.
Mayor Pete wasn't going to get the AA vote, anyway. They're solidly behind Biden for the time being, with Harris getting increasing support I think from that demographic.
I just decided to change from undecided to Pete, for however long it lasts. I really do think he's the best candidate, although I know there's little chance he'll get the nomination. But I wanted to stick my neck out for him, at least for a while. My second choice is Klobuchar, another one w/o much chance.

(31,261 posts)My red county has Black police officers and the largest city has them at a higher percentage than the Black population. If republicans in a red county can do that, why couldn't mayor Pete?

(37,648 posts)I did the affirmative action reports. I saw the ads, tallies & names of all interviewees, who was hired.
Every location is different. It could be as simple as there aren't as many other jobs available for AAs or maybe lower income than in Pete's city. Maybe the pay is different.
But they have a program and have actively tried to recruit. They had an AA Police Chief.

(37,648 posts)You just don't like Pete. He was never going to get the AA vote, anyway. Even if he had perfect numbers in the P.D., you'd complain about something else.

(31,261 posts)There was a police detective that was being taped and the detective knew about it. But the reason for him being taped ended but the person managing the taping forgot to stop it. Not being taped, the detective showed himself to be a racist and was conspiring with other officers against the chief. The racist cop found out he was still being taped when the chief confronted him about his behavior and he ran to the FBI.
A mayor that had an intense desire for racial fairness would have found some way to split the baby. Yes, the chief was wrong to allow the taping to continue when he found out it had not been stopped, but the taping highlighted a virulently racist group of cops. The racist cops should have been cleaned out and reasons given why. What happened was the chief was demoted and later resigned and the ringleader racist cop got a promotion.
I don't hate Buttigieg. Before I found out everything about how blind his administration was toward Black issues there, I was excited about his candidacy. Now, I seriously doubt that the dominant loyalist group in the Democratic Party, African Americans will vote for him, with that happening there is no way that he gets the nomination and he is highly unlikely to be the number two on the ticket.

(497 posts)The incident that happened in South Bend was not his fault. He seems to be sorting the situation as best he can. People say that he doesn't have the African American vote, but how many of the other candidates do. Its obvious that many people out there do like him because he's so far raised the most money, and that's whats going to keep him in the top 5. You can be sure that he should get a lot of the LGBTQ vote. I have yet to see another candidate perform better than him, and I think he's the most intelligent by far.
He has time on his side. If he misses out this time, he can run in 24, 28 or 32. However, I would absolutely love to see him in a debate with Trump.
